14-year-old rape victim lashed to death

Surprised this hasn't been posted her yet, but think it worth noting, particularly in light of previous discussions about how women dress, which seem inevitably to degenerate into "blame the victim" debates.

STORY HIGHLIGHTS:

• Darbesh Khan and his wife, Aklima Begum, had to watch their youngest daughter being whipped until she dropped.
• Hena Akhter, in her last words to her mother, said she was innocent
• At first, an autopsy said she committed suicide
• But later, the ugly details of her case surfaced
• Her family says she was punished twice -- raped and then lashed


Shariatpur, Bangladesh (CNN) -- Hena Akhter's last words to her mother proclaimed her innocence. But it was too late to save the 14-year-old girl.

Her fellow villagers in Bangladesh's Shariatpur district had already passed harsh judgment on her. Guilty, they said, of having an affair with a married man. The imam from the local mosque ordered the fatwa, or religious ruling, and the punishment: 101 lashes delivered swiftly, deliberately in public.

Hena dropped after 70.

Bloodied and bruised, she was taken to hospital, where she died a week later.
Amazingly, an initial autopsy report cited no injuries and deemed her death a suicide. Hena's family insisted her body be exhumed. They wanted the world to know what really happened to their daughter...

I think anyone who opposes the war in the middle east should take a good long hard look at this story and be made to realize that this kind of religious furvor is one of the reasons the wars are being waged.

But in reality, the catholic religion has done much much worse......

Funny thing is, the only reason it doesn't happen here in North America is because laws were written to prevent (or stem) it from happening.

Think of stem cell research that Bush banned. Why? Because he was "brainwashed" to believe that it was immoral. How far is that removed from the belief that the girl should be lashed? (in a theology sense)......

Just remember: it wasn't that long ago that they were burning witches on the east coast of the US. Just a little bit of math, they were held in 1692. That's basically 4 generations. So that would be like your great great grandmother taking part in them.

I always thought of a generation as about 20-25 years... (e.g. the length of time it takes for a baby to grow up and procreate with a child of its own). This being the case 311 years is a good deal LONGER than 4 generations... :shock:

I thought a generation was 1 lifetime....if the average is 70 to 80 yrs as a lifetime, then 5 generations would be 400 yrs.....even conservatively, living to 60 would be 300 yrs.

total: 300 yrs.

But I see your point, that only would work if each subsequant generation was born at the end of the previous life...ie: when they reached 60.

Barbaric. The imam/elder who sanctioned this punishment should be shot and pissed on. Unfortunately, the Qu'ran lends itself to these kind of interpretations. I'm sure most Muslims would find this appalling but there is a significant segment who believes that this type of punishment is what Mohammed intended. Scary shit.
