Last June in Patong I barfined a girl from a bar at the entrance to Soi Sukhumvit. She was ok, turned in an ok performance, but there were certainly no sparks flying for either of us. The next morning we exchanged polite goodbyes, in mutual understanding that our arrangement had come to an end.
The problem was that I had to walk past her bar each day on the way to and from Soi Bangla. When I was by myself it was ok. But when I was with another girl it was a different story. The manager in that bar had a whistle and would start blowing the damn thing as he saw me approach. And then other girls in the bar and the other bar staff would start shouting "butterfly! butterfly!" The girl I had barfined previously didn't take part, and certainly didn't seem bothered I was with another girl. We would even exchange pleasantries on occasion when I was by myself and she wasn't busy with a customer.
So WTF. It really didn't bother me as I was just a punter there on holiday, and not trying to impress anyone with gallantery. But their behaviour struck me as somewhat odd, giving theirs is a culture that places such a premium on maintaining face and avoiding embarrassment. Interesting thing is that the girl I was with would make no comment, or acknowledge them in any way.
Anyone able to decode this?
