A Few Motorcycle Questions from a Newbie....?

I have the chance to buy a 1999 Honda Shadow 750 w/ 17,000 miles with windshield, saddlebags & mustang seat. Ive never ridden a motorcycle or even driven a manual transmission. Im scared to death to even ride one and have to do all the work of shifting etc.... Im thinking of picking up a hondamatic or a scooter, im a 300lb male. Also once you pass the motorcycle skills test you have your motorcycle lisense for life right? I just got my permit today.
