ABWA (rant)

so i went to this ABWA meeting on monday night. i thought it might be a good networking/community thing, but the ladies there seemed to be TOTALLY outside of my realm. so i was contemplating skipping out during the magician's show (?) when the lady across the table asked me:

"so, amanda, where is your massage parlor?"


:shock:

parlor? PARLOR???

i took a deep breath, and prayed for the compassionate one to guide me through my response, which was..

" my OFFICE is located at yadda yadda yadda..." with a very sweet, southern smile.

it was at that point that i decided to JOIN the local ABWA because this is OBVIOUSLY an opportunity to educate.

i've since been asked to be on the board of the ABWA!! guess they're impressed with me! my term begins next month, and i'm also on the committee to choose speakers for each meeting - more opportunities for education!

i'm the youngest member there, and the lady who has been there the longest says she sees me as being chapter president one day..

Just a few months ago I got an email to my website from the Chamber of Commerce Member Director and she said that they've gotten quite a few calls asking about massage parlors in my town, so it would be advaneforum.xxxeous for me to join the Chamber as they only give out Chamber Member info.

I called her immediately and said although I had been thinking of joining the chamber, if anyone called asking me about my "massage parlor" I would be on high alert! I was very polite of course, but did explain that there are different views on that term and that should I join the Chamber I would want to be listed under Massage Therapists and not Massage Parlor. She looked it up in their directory and there is not a massage parlor listing at all.

Just semantics.

Hee! One of my best clients STILL refers to my office as my "massage parlor," and she's not being cheeky either. I can laugh about it now, but that first time, oh my!

we're going to get visits from a nutritionist, public radio, dog trainer and oh, let's not forget - massage therapist! i think it will be fun.
