Oh well, it was just a thought, I suppose. Seems like a lot of my friends retire to become "men of leisure", just to die inside of a year. Had a friend, not too long ago, retire on Friday, died over the weekend and they buried him on Monday. Statistically, the number one killer of men when they retire is the retirement itself. Just don't want to be one. I'll find something to do to keep me busy! Thanks for the insight, guys.

At present officially you need:
1--A photo ID, like a DL
2--Something (like a birthcertificate) showing your right to live in the US.
A passport, of course, is a single document that does both.

However, in practice all most people need is a DL. If you look "foreign born" and don't speak English well then obviously you need to be careful to have all the proper documents. But, as I said, a DL is currently all that most people need.

There is a proposed new regulation requiring those returning to the US to have a passport. It keeps getting delayed; currently it's scheduled to take effect in 2008.
