Advice for a tanning newbie?

Hi,
I've never tanned in a tanning bed before. I'm as pale as a ghost, and I'm sick of it. Plus, it's summer now, and I want to feel confident when I go to the beach or pool and have to wear a bikini.
Anyone have any tips/advice for a tanning newbie? (Do I use lotion? Goggles? Can I tan naked? What types of beds should I look for? etc.) It might help to know that I am a VERY pale girl of Irish/English descent. When I stay out in the sun, I typically burn, then get the slightest bit of color after.
Really, I don't know anything about it, so any tips you give are greatly appreciated.
