alternative treatments for dog with cancer

I am not sure if I am in the right forum for this, but need opinions and experiences with alternative treatments for pets with cancer.

Our beloved 11 1/2 year old Westie (we have had him since age 8 weeks) has just been diagnosed with a liver tumor. We spent $800.00 to get this diagnosis and it would cost an additional $2000 plus to do a risky surgery, plus he has lost weight and body mass, so we don't know if and how he would come out of the surgery. Also, they "think" this is the only site of the cancer, but aren't guartaneeing it so with our luck it would show up elsewhere in time. We can't afford this surgery as well as not wanting to put him through it, so I was wondering if anyone has had any positive response to treating cancer with herbs, homeopathy or any other alternative approach. We are willing to try almost anything at this point.

I have very little direct experience working with animals that have cancer. Mostly, in those situations, I have administered Reiki for bodily comfort and support.

My suggestion is to search out a holistic vet that treats with homeopathy. Also, to feed an all-natural diet...human grade ingredients (protein, etc fit for human consumption), and that do not contain by-products.

There is another great forum – doggie bag online – that you might want to post your question to, as well.

A friend of mine, couldn't afford the surgery either, she took him for accupuncture, and it seemed to ease his pain and discomfort a bit. He tolerated the sessions very well.

Sorry to hear about your dog. I wish you the best luck in finding treatment. I can not imagine what you must be going through with the diagnosis. I am an aniamal lover myself. Good Luck to you and the pooch,will keep you both in my toughts.

Thank you everyone for your kind thoughts and insights into possible ways to provide comfort to our dog.

I have been referred to a homeopathic vet in Wisconsin. I called and was told to fax his history to them and then we could set up a phone consult.

I got the records from his vet and I guess I shouldn't have read them. I got a very dismal picture from what was written about the size of the mass and the prognosis based upon the ultrasound and biopsy results. It all sounded so cold and matter-of-fact. I felt kind of hurt by them talking like that about someone I deeply care for. It also said, "owner declined surgery and will euthanize in the near future." Those words kept going through my head, as we never really said that and it was like they were determining a time frame for the death sentence. We just said that we would watch him closely and not let him suffer.

Sorry to ramble, but the whole thing is quite upsetting.

Big hugs... pets are so important to us and I could never imagine not having a dog and a cat in my life. Yes that does sound cold hearted, but that is the way they are so that they do not get attatched to the animals that they take care of... My vet actually broke down and cried when he put down my dog. She was 17 and I honestly don't know how she lasted that long, we didn't want to, but it came to not being a choice in the end.

My thoughts and hope is with you that the new vet will have a better solution to assist your beloved friend and companion, and help ease this time...
