SAULT STE MARIE, ONT. — Sault Ste. Marie police are searching for a three-year-old girl they believe has been abducted by her mother. Authorities issued an Amber Alert early Monday after Leila Elizabeth May failed to return from a scheduled visit with her mom, police said.
The alert expired around mid-morning but police in the northern Ontario city said neither the girl nor her mother have been found. Police said they aren’t sure if the child has been taken out of the area. The Amber Alert could be reinstated if their investigation determines that has happened.
“It’s still an active and ongoing investigation,” Staff Sgt. Jane Martynuck said.
Police believe the child is with her mother, 21-year-old Kristy Ann Barsanti, who’s described as five foot two, 115 pounds, with above-shoulder dark brown hair with a red streak.
Barsanti has green eyes, but police say she wears blue contacts. Police say Leila is just over three feet tall and weighs 40 pounds, with blue eyes and long blond hair.
She was last seen wearing a green sweatshirt, pink rain jacket, pink rain boots with rabbit faces and Spiderman underwear and socks.
Anyone with information is urged to call 911 or the Sault Ste. Marie police at 705-949-6300.
The Amber Alert system is designed to inform the widest possible audience of a child’s abduction.
