an anatomy question - skin

i had a regular client the other day. she is african american.
she asked me why her scalp feels different from caucasion people.
i am caucasion.
i told her i didn't know; but i would research it and let her know.

i have tried to google this and cannot seem to hit on the correct search terms.

coming from a place of ignorance, can someone please enlighten me?

larger pores and coarser skin will feel different--skin and hair. For example: Shave the leg on a man with very coarse, thick hair, and the leg of a female with very fine, sparse hair, then feel the skin. It feels very different, even without the presence of hair.

i mean in the way the scalp is "cushy" with the african american.
i assumed it was a thicker subcuteanous fat layer between the cranium and skin, or the cranial muscles are somehow larger/thicker.....

mr. mush's theory is that the dermis is overall thicker, hence producing coarser hair, more sebaceus glands.

i would also like to add that in my experience at the large resort spa, i have massaged people of all races, and that mr. mush and i agree, those of african decent have the most luxurious skin. add massage lube to their skin, and it feels like silk. i wish my skin felt like that.

This has also been my experience. One of my "regulars" is African-American and I've told her that I love massaging her because her skin is like "silky velvet."

Mr. Mush's theory sounds about right to me. Makes sense.

Hi Mush,
Generally blacks have thicker and drier skin. If their skin is silky smooth, then it means they have taken good care of it. This information was passed to me by a friend of mine who is a professor and department chair of black history.

(Just a side note, I don't use the phrase- African-American -because using that politically correct terminology offends my African friends.)
