Ankylosing Spondylitis

Did anyone work on a person with Ankylosing Spondylitis? I have researched a bit about this condition and found that people with this condition, especially when they are in an advanced seforum.xxxe, are at risk for a spinal fracture. Any advice on what to avoid or how to treat this condition with therapeutic massage? Thanks

Ankylosing Spondylitis

Do you have a client with Ankylosing Spondylitis? And is it in an advanced seforum.xxxe? I would get an opinion from their treating physician either way, especially if there are severe symptoms. Massage can ease joint stiffness and pain in the surrounding muscles, but definitely avoid joint movement. That's about all I know about it, I've never had a client who has it.

Ankylosing Spondylitis

Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) is an autoimmune condition, causing irritation and finally fusion of the spinal joints, typically starting at the sacro-illiac joints (with some unique hallmark x-ray findings) and working its way up slowly. Eventually the patient loses trunk extension and becomes flexion-dominant. No fun.

The coolest thing is to work with a doctor who practices Functional Medicine (a very state-of-the-art form of natural medicine based on various comprehensive lab testing) who specializes in autoimmune disorders. They can slow or even stop the progression of their disease IF they get the proper immune system support (which sadly does NOT include corticosteroids or other immunosuppressants). You can do WONDERS for that patient in terms of simultaneously preserving their ability to extend by doing stretches, exercises, and of course, keeping the anterior trunk fascia lose (such that it doesn't start bunching up and torquing the patient into a permanent flexion, as is common, especially with AS).
