Another "Body Art" Question

Sorry for posting the same thing twice, I was (correctly) told that my questions might be more appropriate in a new thread. So here it is again. Thanks for putting up with my newbie ways! I am new here, fresh outta school, just took my licensing exam. I have found soooo many helpful tips here, thanks to all of you experts who post! Here's my sitch: I have large visible arm tattoos, and small ones on my hands and neck (none of which are prison/gang affiliated). Oh and a pierced nose.I've been thinking I would like to find a spa-type job (at least part-time) first, am I nuts to think that's gonna happen? Does anyone know the general policies of the spas in Los Angeles? Or should I just keep on going towards having my own business and get an office space? My clientele so far have been musicians (as am I), artists, industry folk, or just plain cool easygoing types, so there have been no problems. Any suggestions? Thanks again!!

Around here the spas wouldn't hire someone with visible tattoos or piercings, but not sure about Los Angeles, I'm sure there's bound to be somewhere more lenient.

Let me also mention I live in southeast Texas, where I was turned down jobs because of my bleached hair and earrings, lol.

Interesting!Thanks for the heads' up Seforum.xxxgnant... I know Austin loves me but not so sure Southeast Texas would be a good place for me to start a practice  lol And Precari, thank you for that nice insight-- I will definitely push forward in what I'm doing and "own it"!

It probably depends on which spa.  I would imagine that  Beverly Hills, Hancook (the language-checker thing wouldn't let me spell it out) Park, Valley, Pasadena and Brentwood/Santa Monica-area are a little more staid about what image their therapists project (not saying that I agree) and that places in Venice or Silver Lake might have more relaxed attitudes toward tattoos/piercings/etc.   In which area of town are you hoping to work?  Have you checked out MODEM in Silver Lake?  Also, Burke Williams in West Hollywood might be an option.  Don't know if it's true, but I'm told that they offer benefits (not sure which ones) with a commitment of four 5-or-6 hour shifts weekly (including at least one Sat or Sun).  They used to allow employees to rent rooms during weekday mornings/late afternoons for an absurdly low hourly rate.  If that's still the case and those hours fit your current clientele's availability, you could make quite an income (especially for a beginner therapist).

Kim, I live in Jersey but I used to live in Cali for a while. I definitely think you could find a spa in LA that would be cool with your tattoos. You just gotta find the right place... like I'm thinking maybe a hip, modern spa that caters to a younger crowd. Somewhere that the type of clientele you already seem to generate (musicians, artists, industry ppl) would like to go. Good luck on your job hunt!Chrissy

I live in Hollywood now but used to live in Silverlake where Modem is, I'll look there too. The Venice gig looks cool, although I'm with ya on selling product  :-/ but either way worth checking out!I should just show up in person at all these spas, I'll bet I could figure out their policies just by their reactions  ;D
