Any camera suggestion for a newbie photographer?

I have had a long time interest in photography, but I have only ever used regular digital cameras.
(Like my last one, a Nikon cool pix.) I am now in need of a new camera, and am feeling like it might be time to upgrade. (I will be a freshman in college next fall as an art major.) I was wondering if anyone has suggestions of what kind of camera I should get (specific recommendations would be great: such a brand, even link, etc.), and where I can get a good deal on one. Thank you.

Either a Nikon or Canon, they are practically the same, except Canon cameras have more buttons, where as Nikons are more menu oriented. The new Nikon d3000 is a nice starter camera, but it depends on how much you want to spend too.

You might give us all a hint as to what line of photography you plan to pursue. Is it wildlife, wild-people, studio work, etc.... I would think that you would want a camera with a nice telephoto lens and the ability to change to a different one. Check ebay for deals but remember, when it comes to service some shops won't fix it if you didn't buy it there. Nikon makes a nice camera, you can't go wrong there. Get what you can afford, don't go into debt at this time in your life.
