I have a new pt who presented today...his history includes a complete rupture of the achilles tendon 8 years ago which was repaired and physio regained full ROM as well as strength. Approximately 1 year ago he had another injury while doing drill training for football(soccer) which he also had physio for only less successfully for what they called a calf sprain/strain. He has never felt that he has regained full strength, and while doing a 5 km run in January he was forced to walk the 2nd half. Most recently he complains of a restless feeling in the calf which travels down to the foot (medially) when he is sitting at his desk or on the couch as well as when he lies down in bed. He is very aware of weakness on the one side and there is a slightly diminshed gastrocs/soleus. An MRI shows that a tear in the soleus muscle never completely repaired and a fatty deposit within the area. He is otherwise in good health and lives an active lifestyle which he feels is limited by the weakness/pain/altered sensation in his calf.
An MD told him he would never run a marathon... he's still hoping to prove him wrong
A friend said he was helped with myofascial release to diminish what sounds like a modified version of restless leg syndrome.
So far he has received on treatment today and I will get feedback on Monday.
Any suggestions as to what could be occuring and how to help?
