On June 1, 1917, Mexican President Carranza signed a degree that for all practical purposes nationalized Mexican vessels, establishing a merchant navy and armed navy. From this arose the Mexican custom of naming girls Marina who are born on June 1st.
Venustiano Carranza de la Garza was one of the leaders of the 1910 revolucion, headed by by Francisco I. Madero, that overthrew the dictator Porfirio Diaz. In 1914 he succeeded the dictatorial Huerta regime. During Carranza's presidency the current (1917) Mexican constitution was written.
