Are you allowed to take painkillers day before surgery?

Just wondering if you're allowed to take any painkillers the day before surgery. My surgery is on Thursday but I have to make the trip down to a hotel near the hospital, on Wednesday. I'm in more pain now than ever and I won't be able to tolerate a 4 hr train trip without some strong painkillers. I think there might be a cut-off point for taking medication before surgery (maybe 24 hrs). Does anyone know?

I'll be speaking with my surgeon later this afternoon so I'll be asking him, but I just wanted to know in advance.

I would imagine you will be NBM (nil by mouth) from midnight so as long as you've taken the tablets before then you should be fine.

When you say strong painkillers are they prescription or over the counter?

prescription - Oxycodone (instant release)

I've never tried opiates before but I need to now. The pain I'm getting is incredible

Whether you can take painkillers or not is up to the aneasthetist and surgeon and depends on the operation chosen. Some say 14 days without medication some say a minimum of 24 hours. Sometimes patients are actually admitted early because they need to be off their meds and they will need the extra care and support before the operation too.

Hi Jim

I had to remain on my medication up to and throughout my op. The anaesthetist is best to advise.

quick update. I necked my first Oxycodone pill (5mg).

3 hours on and it's done absolutely zero

I'll up it to 2 pills (10 mg) for my journey on Wednesday, but I'm already concerned that it won't help. Is my freakish body just immune to medication?

Dear Jim,

Most painkillers take time to 'load up' the body and do their work.It's always scary taking the first one and then waiting and watching every breath and twinge. Try and relax, and you will be fine, Just think of Friday Can someone go with you to support you on the journey?

You're probably right, Cassie. I'll take another 1 capsule when I go to bed and see how I am in the morning.

Wish someone would drive me down there and I could just lie in the backseat but I'm stuck with the train. I don't mind going down there on my own. I've got a friend picking me up after the op, that's the main thing.
