aromatherapy GOOD course?

hello,

I am looking for an excellent aromatherapy course/college, something with experts in the field of botanics, the human body and natural medecine in general. For these reasons, and having trained as a school teacherI will not ever go again for the quick "training" with the easy qualification at the end of it (for:subject knowledge and intellectual competence or talent) as I have been traumatised by tutors who have sold their souls and teach factory-style and are not even experts in their fields or passionate about their subjects, just met educational targets..

I know 2 schools in London look amasing: Neal's Yard and something like ITHPA, i have read everything on their web site, but no, I will not and cannot put £3000 for a (deep) interest. their teaching look very complete and have integrity. but too expensive.

I also have looked at Ageraromatherapy: anyone can tell me their opinion about this school, or any other?

I live in south west england...that is another thought.

Also, for me it is important the diploam is just not an ITEC, I want an IFA recognition.

In short, i am not looking for a passport to start a practice, but for high-quality learning, the one in a lifetime.

Any advice welcome!

Have you looked at Beaumont College in Bournemouth?

Courses are run in an intensive way in blocks of four/five days.

Their web site is also informative. Denise is passionate about the subject and an excellent instructor both practical and theoretical (in my opinion)

I had a good look at her school too, and liked the way it went into detail about the oils/plants study...but I don't live near (well, Avon) and this would mean staying at a B&B.
Also, to do the Aromatherapy course, you need the ITEC massage diploma, and that means even more money...ahhh, I am so tired of all this research, I want to settle on a course, really!!!!!!!!someone help me!

Have you contacted the International Federation of Aromatherapists they have a list of accredited schools - some of whom will run correspondence courses (with workshop attendances). Hi there, I might be too late, as I've only just joined the forum. If it helps, I'm studying at the Penny Price academy in Hinckley. She has an excellent website, but I don't know if I'm allowed to post the details here. She is definitely approved by the IFPA. Don't know about the IFA. Although I am doing the course by distance learning, I have done one of the 5 day modules, as I wanted the hands-on massage training. I liked the fact that I was in a small group, and that we really got to handle oils, carriers and hydrolats. There is good background on chemistry and botany. It suits me very well, and all I can say that I find the standard as I'd like it to be (sorry - covering my back there, I was a Solicitor before I started this!)

The best place to find out unbiased information about training in aromatherapy at the agreed National Standards that comply with the AC Core Curriculum is on the Aromatherapy Council's website at [link=http://www.aromatherapycouncil.co.uk]www.aromatherapycouncil.co.uk[/link]

Go the the education and training page and at the bottom is a list of all the professional associations and awarding bodies that have benchmarked their courses to at least the National Occupational Standards and meet the AC standards, which was developed by the profession itself. Fromthe AC websiteyou can do a Nationwide search. Some associations will accept each others qualifications for membership, so check this out in advance. Associations are what is called "representing bodies", rather like the Royal College of Nursing in the nursing profession. Their job is to look after your needs as an aromatherapist, support you in the event of a complaint being made against you, offer you cheaper insurance through a block scheme, offer leaflets, uniforms, therapy support groups, journals and conferences, looking after your CPD needs. The regulatory body for nursing is the Nursing and Midwifery Council, whichis a statutory regulated body. For aromatherapy we have in place a voluntary self-regulatory body, as we are in the early stages of becoming a "profession" and need to prove ourselves. The Aromatherapy Council is that body and it is this body you will want to register with once qualifying and use AC Registered after your name, which will give quality assurance to the public and other healthcare professionals of your professional status as an aromatherapist. The job of the regulator is to protect the public and to maintain the educationsal standards, thereby protecting the integrity of the profession as a whole.

My Tip would be where possible, go and meet the tutor and find out about their experience in aromatherapy. You have to commit to working with this person for at least a year so it is important that you feel comfortable with them. Talk to friends and other aromatherapists. If the tutor is also a practising aromatherapist, it is useful to pay and book yourself in for a treatment with them so you can be assured of their technique and knowledge. It is also very important that they are insured to teach aromatherapy.

I have been a Teacher of many therapies since 1972 and was a member of the first association to require Compulsory Codes of Conduct in 1974. That association was also one of the first with ICM

Myself and the association I belong to have no wish to belong to the aromatherapy council.

Many of us benchmark our courses well above the NOS and have been doing this for a number of years.

I do not, nor do many I know need to prove ourselves through reassessment by the AC assessors, when we do not know of their qualifications and if we did, we may not want to accept them.

Regulation and Registration of Aromatherapists in the UK is voluntary self-regulation. This means that an aromatherapist can still practice and not have to be AC Registered.

Being listed on the Aromatherapy Council's website is no guarantee on individual teaching standards.

My association also offers low cost insurance (they do not say cheep) we are and have been for many years a voluntary self-regulatory association, we are professional aromatherapists and have been part of that profession for many years. (We are not in the early stages of becoming a "profession")

Perhaps we should look at One of the definitions of Profession and Professional?

Profession: Is a body of persons engaged in an occupation or calling:
Come on we have been doing that since 1972?

Professional: Is 'a person who is expert at his or her work'
I am sure we all are that.

Being registered with most professional associations will give the same quality assurance to the public and other healthcare professionals of your professional status as an aromatherapist They may also offer uniforms, equipment, therapy support groups, journals and conferences and looking after your CPD needs.

There is much more I could say but please check the costs out for membership of any association and or tuition. The assessment fees vary immensely as do the requirements for acceptance.

He has lots of interesting articles (as well as running a course) which criticise how aromatherapy is taught on most courses and the myths, in his view, that they perpetuate about how essential oils act on the body. Definitely worth checking out.

Can anyone personally recommend a good course and tutor for aromatherapy, preferably in the london/ se area, though further afield weekend courses considered too. I really want to do aromatherapy but have had terrible past experience with tutor! There seem to be so many different couses around too. IFPA seems very expensive, and am not sure how ITEC and VTCT compare. Am confused! Can anyone help?
In the future i would like to do indian head massage and seated massage too, so any recommendatios for those would be gratefully received.
