I would like to hear from anyone else who has taken AOBT workshop or has received such a treatment.  I received training Oct. 2,003 and have totally enjoyed using this unique modality.  Any opinions/comments or experiences are welcome.God Bless You.

I became certified in AOBT in December.  I absolutely love it!!!!!!!  My clients who try AOBT are left speechless by the way they feel after a treatment.  I love it that i don't have to kill myself to get nice and deep.  The work is so much kinder to the muscles too.....the clients really appreciate that.  One of my clients travels an hour to get to me.  Another lives more than 2 hours away!!!Were you trained directly by Ruthie?  I was not....but I had a fabulous instructor.....Lynn Graves in Virginia.

Hey! I'm glad to hear from you.  My instructor was Janette Perry and she was great, too.  She taught the first Arkansas class.  I'm eager to take Ashi II later this year if time and money will allow.  Also I really like doing the Ashi-stone routine.  What an awesome massage.  Whenever I have a really big muscular client I just tell them that if they want deep tissue it will have to be Ashiatsu.  Before Ashiatsu my poor old thumbs and wrists were at critical mass and frankly, Scarlett, I don't think they would have lasted another 5 years.  Do you mind telling me your rates?  I charge $65 for a 75 minute session, which may sound too low but I live in the economically depressed Mississippi delta; I can't afford to cater to the affluent.  God bless you, and "stay medial."  Sincerely,

I've heard Jannette is great too!  Glad you're having a wonderful experience.  How do you work in the hot stones?  Are all of your Ashi treatments 75 minutes?  What is the going rate for a 60 minute massage in your area?  Here, at spas, etc. it's $70 and up.....but of course that is for a "spa Hour" of 50 minutes.  I charge $65 for 60 minutes.......that's for a regular massage and that's pretty typical rate for massage establishments, gyms, etc....those places not quite as fancy as spas.  I charge $85 for a 75 minute Ashi treatment.  I know other people who charge quite a bit more.....but I prefer to be reasonable.  I figure more people will be able to get treatment that way.  I have had a couple people say that perhaps they would just like Ashi on their back.  I'm debating about whether I will offer that.....and just work it into a 60 minute massage and charge $75 for that.  I will probably only do it on request.......not list it on my menu of services.  Your opinion?Are your Ashi clients previous clients who you have introduced to Ashi or are you recruiting them fresh and specifically for Ashi?  I've just set up my office.  At first I tried to atttract people by advertising Ashi......but I think people just don't know what it is and they don't understand.  It is easier to just see what they need and if it's deep tissue work.......then I recommend Ashi.....by this time I'm on the phone with them and we've already spoken for a bit and I can asses what they need and they trust me a little bit.  What's working for you?Do you have anybody in your area that does Ashi?  I know someone about 10 minutes away.  We are going to trade next week..........it's great that I can also receive a treatment!!!  I'd feel cheated if I didn't have anybody I could go to for it.Nice chatting.Lisa

Wow!!!!!  Thanks for the detailed Ashi/Stone routine.  I thought about just combining my knowledge and seeing how it goes.  I have a question.......I was taught to use only oil with the stones......so.......doesn't that make the body a little too slippery for the Ashi?  Ashi is so awesome by itself.....I can't imagine how it feels once the muscles are melted by the hot stones.  Oh.....how I wish I could have it done to me!!!  The girl that lives nearby doesn't do the stone/ashi combo.  I'm not even sure she does stones at all.  My husband doesn't like deep work at all so isn't a fan of Ashi, but my friend who did tons of work on my office for me (free) LOVES the stones and LOVES the ashi......I can't wait to combine the two with him and get his review!!!  I owe him massage for life for all the work he did in my office......and he lets me do anything to him to practice and gives great feedback and suggestions.  I can't wait to put these two together.  Don't you just wish you could massage yourself sometimes?  Everybody tells me how wonderful I am......I wanna know what I'm missing!!!!Yes.......I would love to take Ashi II.  I need to build up more clientele first before I spend more money to learn more techniques.  Thanks for sharing!!!!!!!  I'm glad I found you!  Not too many of us around.  There are less than a dozen certified Ashi therapists in my state and I don't even think all of them are practicing.  Be well,Lisa

I looked at the website http://www.deepfeet.com and they mentioned that if you weighed over 135lbs you would be asked to modify your technique.  Do any of you who practice Ashiatsu fall into that category?  If so, do you feel it's still a great benefit to be able to apply this modality?  Even in the modified form?Thanks,Nanette

Nanette,Yes......I fall into the "over 135" category.  This is not an issue at all at the beginning when learning Ashiatsu I, as only one footed moves are taught......and at least one foot is on the table at all times.  It does become more of an issue when using the 2 footed moves....and then it would depend on how much over the 135 you are and the size of your client.  Before they modified the program some, they were teaching the two footed moves in the class.  I did not learn them and when I did a treatment on a therapist nearby who also knows the modality...she was not taught some of the one footed moves that also have a 2 footed variation....she is well under the 135.  I think these one footed moves will come in handy for anyone.....for when they have a client that can't handle all the weight......even if you are less than 135.  What happens is you then have to use more upper body strength to give less pressure when you are using two feet.  If you know the one footed version......you just use one foot.......less work for the therapist.  Before taking the workshop, I wanted to receive an Ashi treatment.  The woman I went to said she doesn't normally do Ashi on women...because it is so deep and it is so much extra work for her.......she has to be holding her body weight so much.  Too bad she didn't know the one footed moves.I wouldn't be concerned.  One footed moves are great!!!If you have any more questions, just let me know.

Does anyone have the links for Ashiatsu courses?  I saw something on the news a few months ago about it, I haven't gone to get it yet and the spa that it's at charges $100/hour for it, but I'm sure it's worth every penny, maybe I'll treat myself for my birthday next month!  I would love to offer something like that to my clients...ah, someday when I have my own office!

Hi everyone!I am a LMT in NY and I was debating on whether or not to take the course, and basically the only thing holding me back is the cost ($600), I was wondering if anyone could give me an idea of how well the modaltiy has gone over with their exsisting clients and did it bring more people in at all?  Just weary about spending that amount of time and money on something that is not quite worth it!!??  Please any comments welcomed at this time! Lisa,I absolutely LOVE AOBT!  It is wonderful for my body.....I feel I will be able to be in the field longer because I use this modality.  Incredible way to do deep work without stress to the joints.  When I took the course, I did not have much of an established clientele to work on.  I had been working at the YWCA.....mostly older women, so they were not the right clientele for this work.  I have opened my own office and put up the bars.  It's been a slow go.....but is definitely catching on.  Most people absolutely love it.  It's hard to advertise the modality....that doesn't seem to bring people in....I think they form their own opinions before learning more than what you can put in an ad.  Instead, I have found it more effective to offer relief to back pain sufferers and to target those who like deep work....then when they call, we discuss AOBT and see if it's a good match for them......and if it's not.......they still come to me for a regular massage. A girl I took the course with works in a salon and is quite established there.  She had no problems with her existing clientele......within a couple weeks of taking the course, she was booked with 4 AOBT sessions a day!  So......look at your clientele and think about what kind of work you generally do with them.  If it's mostly fluffy swedish......then they will be hard to turn on to this modality.  If they like deep work..........GO FOR IT!!!  It's a wonderful deep massage.  I have several clients who travel more than an hour to get to me for this work.  That's quite a compliment.  Good luck.Lisa

Thanks so much Lisa!I decided to take it and I am so excited!  I am taking the course in NYC with Janette, and from previous posts, she is great!  I am working at a health club right now and that was the main reason for looking into AOBT, because these people that work out all the time all want DEEP work and I am 5'1" and 127lbs, it is killing me!  I am only 26 and don't want to have to stop in 2 years from an overuse injury!   From what I have been told, this is the perfect modality for someone like me! I don't want to give up giving my clients what they want, but I can't do this to my body any longer!  So I am goin' for it!  Thanks,  and if anyone has any suggestions about marketing this, would love to know!

I am interested in learning this technique, but I am rather tall (5'11") and weigh 175 lb. Is there anyone out there my size currently doing this technique?I am in South Central Kentucky and interested in receiving a AOBT treatment. Anybody close to me?

i just want to say that im a big fan of ashiatsu and for me it doesnt bother me for the practitioner to be any weight i have had a session with a practitioner who was 155 pounds  and she used her entire weight only holding on to the bar with her finger tips for balance and that was the best experience i have ever had
