I don't think we'll ever see the type of establishment in Toronto, or North America... to my knowledge it barely still exists in my beloved Thailand anymore.
I visited Thailand many times, but the last time was already almost 15 years ago, so it's probably a much changed scene now. Those familiar with large asian cities will know it's not uncommon for similar businesses to congregate in the same area or street. In Bangkok there used to be a street dedicated to just sports clothing where you could buy ripoff versions of every football jersey you could think of. I still have some hilarious bad copies. But I digress.
There used to also be a street where the salons congregated. Bless me if I recall the name of the street, but I had almost as much fun...no I'm actually pretty sure I had MORE fun there, than on Soi Cowboy or Nana Plaza. The girls in the Salons would dress to the 9s. Tight mini skirt ensembles, nylons (always my weak spot), and their hair and nails done to perfection. As you strolled down the street, they'd try to entice you in for a haircut or manicure etc. They offered other legit services too, like hand and foot massage, or ear cleaning, but I rarely went for those. For the ridiculous price back then of about $5.00, you'd get an hour or more in the chair with a pretty flirty girl fussing over you, pressing her legs or boobs to you while she cut your hair and made all kinds of suggestive talk. If you popped one while in the chair, she'd be sure to find an excuse to touch or rub it or pretend to be "shocked" etc. It was all great fun. To make matters more exciting, you never knew what you were going to get. Half the girls would go no further than what I've described here, the other half would happily make arrangements to meet you after work. You had to know the limits. Overly grabby or indiscreet guys got shut down, ignored or worse. Keeping it respectful, light and fun worked wonders.
Even now those memories are exciting. I remember making a date with a girl who looked like a geisha, with her hair piled high, tall for a Thai, busty and we agreed to meet for dinner. I only half jokingly asked her to be sure to meet me in her work uniform--a tight blue mini dress that was so tight she could hardly move or bend. That night, when I met her at Pizza Hut (her choice), I got to our booth to find her...and two of her colleagues...all three wearing the same uniform. They thought it was a hoot to "trick" me into buying them all dinner. After a flirty dinner where they took turns feeding me by hand, we went to the local mall. I bought them each some clothing and makeup and then back to my place for fun with the three of them. I think the entire night cost me less than $125.00 and this would have been back in the mid 90s. That was my Thailand. I'd more often pickup flirty girls in legit businesses (Top Charoen was my fave), than actually doing a short or long time from a bar or beer garden. It was so easy and the Thai girls had such a great sense of humour and making things fun.
