Back Pain and being a Massage Therapist?

I have herniated discs in my lower back and my current job requires sitting at a desk and also some heavy lifting in the warehouse. I think i need to find a new job that doesn't require either of these things. i also can't really work more than 5 or so hours a day. Trouble is i can't think of a job that doesn't require me to sit at a desk all day or to do heavy lifting and be part time. I thought maybe i could study and get a diploma in remedial massage and that way i could work 5 hours a day and be standing up. I just worry that it may aggravate my back. I was wondering if any one out there has a lower back problem and works a a massage therapist and could let me know if it would be possible. And if not maybe some other options??

I'm 26 and need a decent wage i have a partner and a 7mth old baby girl i need to provide for and working for my self in massage for 25 hrs a week i could make enough cash. Any advice would be greatly appreciated

The school would take me 18mths to do so i've looked into all of that and the costs involved just need first hand knowledge from people in the industry as to how hard it is on your back......From the sounds of it at least at this stage i dont think i could handle it.....Shame i was really keen i thought i had a solution for my work problems...i really need to work just can't find a job i can do

First of all, school is going to take some time - at least a year, likely longer, depending on where you are located (different states have different requirements for the number of hours of school required for massage). And it is very physical work and can be very hard on your body. A good teacher will stress good body mechanics and that helps a lot, but I don't know of any therapists working with herniated discs so I don't know about your problem specifically. 5 hours a day might be realistic, but then it might not. It might be too much for you if you have back pain issues. I'm young, in good physical shape, no major problems, and 5 hours is a pretty full day's work for me. 6 hours is my comfortable limit. Any more than that and the quality of my work starts to deteriorate and I'm exhausted.
