Police have warned spa owners in Bali to be on the lookout for paedophiles and sexual predators after a massage therapist allegedly sexually assaulted a 12-year-old boy from Perth.
Kuta police chief I Wayan Sumara said the boy had gone to Damen massage in Kuta with his mother and grandmother on Sunday, May 21.
He said the therapist, a 47-year-old man named Abdurahman, asked the boy to strip naked, because massage oil would be used, and lie face downwards for the massage.
However Mr Wayan said he became aroused when he saw the boy's genitals after he asked him to turn on his side.
"The victim suspected something was off, so he turned his head and saw the perpetrator's penis," Mr Wayan said.
"The boy ran and found his mother."
Mr Wayan said the boy told his mother what had happened and they immediately came to the police station and filed a report.
"The boy was in shock after the incident, the parents can't accept what happened to their son," he said.
"But the police were able to ensure them that we will investigate and protect them. They calmed down and cooperated fully."
Abdurahman, who has been in Bali for five years, has been charged with sexual assault and faces a maximum 20 years in jail.
He was paraded before the media at a press conference on Tuesday. He stood, head bowed, between two police officers, wearing a baggy orange T-shirt with the numeral 5.
"We caution all spa owners and managers to be very careful and to ensure their spa is not being used by paedophiles or sexual predators to pick their victims," Mr Wayan said.
The Kuta police chief said Abdurahman had confessed to 15 homosexual acts with males or transsexuals on previous occasions, including at another spa in Bali in Batubulan.
However Abdurahman told the media the previous sexual acts had been with consenting adults.
