You could also search the board (and a certain singapore board) to find venues that do speak english, there are many.

As to learning Chinese it is a long and tortuous path for some but a basic understanding, especially of numbers and money, can be most helpful.

Most mongers have a good time here but, like many places, rip offs and scams are around so be aware of them and avoid them.

Five star hotels do have english speaking girls I have met a few, not all girls however speak english so it depends on what you want to do, company in the ktv then play or just play.

Most of the girls that I go with speak no english and my chinese is not good.

Here's a suggestion, don't go back to Beijing unless you learn how to speak basic Mandarin. Most Beijinger don't know how to speak even the most basic English and that goes for Shanghai is certain areas.

Hi all

Last time I was in Beijing I went inside a KTV lounge ( in a 5 star hotel )
and there were very pretty girls but there is a terrible language problem
and I just could not communicate with the hostess.

Lucky1973 is right, book with sinohotel or elong and get a copy of the confirmation in english and chinese (ask in the remarks part of the booking for this). Depends om how much money you want to spend as to which hotel you book. Like Lucky my chinese is not good but I have no problem with being understood, a little encouragement for the desk staff and english can be forthcoming.
Be aware that two star systems operate in china, international and chinese, the latter being one or two stars less than international i.e. chinese 4 star may be international 2 star and also the chinese rated hotels are not consistent i.e. may say three stars but be quite nice or may be just a glorified brothel (ktv with rooms attached).

Sorry if this is a real nuisance guys. I will be going to BJ for first time in 2 weeks. What area is the best place to stay at. Can you recommend a hotel close to action and that is girl friendly?
