Being picked last.

Reading the article of Phill Kessel being picked last had me thinking of my younger days watching the last kid being picked (sometimes me) was painful. Any stories to share?.

Phil Kessel is being paid $5,400,000 by the Toronto Maple Leafs . . . this guy is laughing all the way to the Bank . . .

They pick the Maple Leaf last and make Kessel look like a fool. Then on the Player's Association survey they asked the players "what coach would you least like to play for?" Wilson of the Leafs. Total setup to Leaf bash.

I used to get picked last for street hockey and baseball. In fact, it wasn't so much being picked last. More like the last one left.

It bothered me back then.

Then puberty hit.

I never had a problem being picked for teams, but I was always the last one standing at dances. I would sit and watch while my friends all were up and I was the one leaning up against the wall. Then high school hit and I was the only one without a boyfriend and no date for the prom. When I was 16 I discovered the difference between men and boys. I haven't looked back since...

Being picked last just tells you that your not very good at something or that you annoy people. It's a good lesson to learn and can motivate some individuals to make changes. I was something of a late bloomer...grew tall early but wasn't very coordinated. I wasn't always picked for the teams but I did work harder to get better and by college was usually asked first to join a team.

The negative things that happen in gradeschool can be a plus for many. It's those who let it get to them that get hurt. I don't think all the PC stuff about teams not keeping score is going to help kids either. Kids can see through that BS. My kids will learn that they won't always be the favorite or the best...and if so, they need to make some changes or try other things.

My problem was that I was a sucker for the quiet ones. The computer club, the chess club, the science club. Loved them and they just weren't interested. A shame really because I was ready to play. The jocks were to high and mighty for my tastes and I was probably too mouthy for most guys. I didn't fit into the shape de jour being far to curvaceous for the times.

Not being part of the "in" crowd does affect ones self esteem at that age. Even today it's easier to sell it than to give it away. Being an SP has ensured I enjoy a very healthy sex life. I definitely have blossomed during the aging process and now if I don't get asked to dance, I dance by myself. Life is too short not to...

I used to get picked last for all things sport when I was a kid and then I hit puberty.
In a lot of cases after puberty I was always picked near the first, but the sports were different.

Yes, but kids should be encouraged to play or get fit - it should be fun and not humiliating. Humiliation wasn't a motivator for me, it was the opposite. Who needs that crap whether they're 7 or 17 years old?

They could have picked the worst player first! It still would have been Kessel just not as embarrassing. That's what is done in houseleague sports these days.

Being asthmatic and overweight, I was not athletically inclined. Therefore I was typically picked last. And yes it hurt. But when it came to hockey and soccer they quickly learned to pick me early....Seemed the fat slow kid was an amazing goalie.

In my last year of high school I would be the kid that had to select one of the teams regularly.

After a few times I could see the dejection in the kids getting chosen last so I purposely started reversing things and chose the ''worst'' kids first.

My teachers would give me a strange look at first but after a while they got it. Plus strangely enough the non athletic kids were so happy to be chosen first that they started to actually athletically perform better. Go figure, just shows you the role confidence plays in sport.

As a side note I became popular with the non athletic crowd who also seemed to be more intellectually gifted and received help on my assignments. A win-win all around in the end.
