belonging to an association??

Hi, i recently qualified as a reflexologist, but after browsing the internet for quotes on joining organisations, have been put off by the hefty prices!!

Is it okay to go it alone, or is it a requirement to join an organisation??
I know i need insurance, but can anyone also advise me on a good value insurance as a mobile reflexologist, there are so many out there!

Any advice greatly appreciated!!

i am with FHT, and i find them very good been with them for nearly 3 years, i have my insurance with them as well. there prices are good aswell

I am with FHT also and have been very happy, but there is no legal requirement to belong to any association. I find it useful as it adds credibility to what I do, they are informative and if (ever) the industry becomes regulated, I will be represented by them. They also offer different levels of membership

The FHT's own insurance, Therapy Insurance Services, are reasonable. Again insurance isn't legally required, but is a sensible option if you have paying clients.

You'll find that you probably can't get insurance without being a member of a professional body. It might depend which body you qualified with but the FHT are certainly a good organisation.

To get insurance without professional membership is very easy.

To get professional membership without insurance is very unlikely.

I don't know about the FHT but the AoR have area groups. You don't have to be a member of the AoR to join or attend a local group but you can't represent the AoR at events if you're not a member of the association (reasonably enough). Have a look here for more info

According to the FHT website, there is a members' group in central and south east Kent.

I've never really thought about this. I know that the insurance I have is dependent on me being a member of the AoR. Also, I'm just about to do some voluntary work at a hospice and I have to be a member of the AoR to do this.

I suppose as long as you can get insurance it wont matter.

Yes, some hospices and other health care settings require membership of particular associations as this ensures that you are trained to a particular standard, although of course, you could still have the same training without the membership - it just makes it easier for them to recognise.
