This idea is not really new, when I started PhuketWatch 2001 we were actually in talks with police/politicians to get access to CCTV cameras on Bangla, the idea come from one known politician here.

UK is one of the most over CCTV'd places in the world and the cops there admit it's next to useless. Real time monitoring an operator (properly trained!!) should not be on a camera more than 20 minutes and the idea of these guys monitoring 4 or more screens effectively is complete phish, there's too many distractions. The biggest deterrent is its use after the fact, but unless they make all people on Bangla remove their head gear again it's rendered ineffective. Bearing the inability of the cops to defeat any other crime on the island this is just another PR stunt and will flop. On the flip side it will give the public watching it real time an idea of what the MiB turn their backs to!

I also like the fact that they ID'd the restaurant but not the owner in the Gazette- tis not rocket science to put two and two together. Once again sterling reporting by the Gazette!

Here's an extract: Huge investment in closed-circuit TV technology has failed to cut UK crime, a senior police officer has warned.

Det Ch Insp Mick Neville said the system was an "utter fiasco" - with only 3% of London's street robberies being solved using security cameras.

Although Britain had more cameras than any other European country, he said "no thought" had gone into how to use them.

He also said more training was needed for officers who often avoided trawling through CCTV images "because it's hard work".

"CCTV was originally seen as a preventative measure," the Guardian quotes him as saying.

"Billions of pounds has been spent on kit, but no thought has gone into how the police are going to use the images and how they will be used in court. It's been an utter fiasco: only 3% of crimes were solved by CCTV.

"There's no fear of CCTV. Why don't people fear it? [They think] the cameras are not working."

Great entertainment- but effective?? It didn't stop the IRA! If it doesn't work there the chances of it being effective here are................................

i don't think we use cameras as much in States but I do know they have been highly effective in reducing drug trade in some areas but i guess that more surveilance than cathing a one-off crime

I spent some days in Baltimore on business some months back, and I took a wrong exit from the highway and found myself in an area with an abundance of CCTV cams. They were all sporting police-style flashing blue lights. It sure made me want to find the on-ramp to the highway

Ohh for that contract huh ?? I wonder which local pol scored that one !!
