Biggest changes in Patong Since the beginning of 2004

Hello everyone,

I've been in Phuket for about five months last year (August - December 2003). I worked in a hotel, but at the beginning of January I had to come back to Europe again.

But, this August I'm going back again for two weeks. What I was wondering what the biggest changes are in Patong since the beginning of January. Is the Safari still open 'till 04:00? And the underground afterwards?
How is Tiger? Are there a lot of bars closed? Are there any new bars opened yet?

Hello everyone,

Last time i was there in April it will still 4am closing at Safari , one of my fave places to go after Tiger closed :biggrinlo
But what about this ''underground'' afterwards ? Is this a seperate club ? or are you saying that Safari club has some kind of underground base like out of a james bond movie , i certainly hope so

Underground is one of my fave late late stops before superstars if I am having a 9 AM er.. They generally go till about 6..

Harder music / techno.. Little hot sweaty underground joint.. Fun barmen etc but bring a girl as by 5 AM or so the choices aint too sweet.

Just go a little past Safari and down the stairs

Still relaxed closing time. Dragon Entertainment opened late December so it is considerely new. Club Rio at Rock Hard, Fantasia in Phuket Town (upscale club with hostesses available). I havent been to Safari or Underground since Feb so I have no idea but I guess it is running as usual.

Star Club with thai disco/live music but it is closed again I think?

I like to visit Dragon sometimes to play some pool when the bars close.

Was just kitted out last nov-04 and upstairs was a rundown heap

Star world / wars / Club (Shark) ?? Damn that must have been some outlay ??

The Canuk that had to bail on it (thanks to a 5 year old photo) lost huge sums of money.. Also Nov 04.. Me thinks your in a timewarp

Dragon did really well when it opened as due to connections it was the latest opening.. even Safari etc was being closed while it was open.. that kind of made it the defacto late night meat market and it was booming.. Then with the mayoral elections they lost a lot of thier 'clout' and the 16 day / 3 week closure order they got kind of inturrupted thier flow a bit.. Now they have the same approx closure as croc / tiger / others it seems to me. Lots of overhead in a club like that 70+ staff, airco etc...

I was referring to the place next to Safari, next one up if you are going towards karon/kata
Downstairs had been completed but upstairs was an absolute heap
Ive still got the plans we made for the potential redevelopment & the budget.
I was initially interested as they were literally giving it away! I took cold feet because it seemed too cheap (key money 1 million, rent 15k per month, redevelopment 350k) and was worried about the entertainment zones. It might have had the potential for a drip roast off safari.

Have any of you Phuket residents/bar owners noticed the place that used to be Koh Joy, the LB cabaret restaurant? Koh Joy packed up and moved its operation over to Cocktails and Dreams - much busier, much less overhead. Apparently a Canadian bloke took over the Koh Joy site and completely renovated it. He was going to re-open it as a male strip club aimed at ladies only audiences! Very popular with japanese tourists, apparently. He's got all the signage up on the front and everything, must have spent a bomb on it all, but now he's decided not to bother. The Koh Joy people even thought of taking it back, but it's no use to them now because the guy ripped out the restaurant kitchen.

Might make a decent bar though......

Ahh Ok... Figured the ex Shark would be major money..

Joy (of Joys massageplanete, Beach Rd) and the big fella in there every night seem to be splitting it now.. Was the key money 3 years.. I dont know about a mil being so cheap out of town there.. It does not get busy till 3 or so as its only used as an after hours..

Yeh it was 3 years and know what you're saying because thats what made me take cold feet, albeit we had some good plans for that place. Had 2 Thai partners, the theme was focussed on 60% Thai 40% tourist. In addition the refurbishment was going to be for almost free as the guy who made Crocodile Disco, Star Wars and Tiger is a friend...........................

I dont know if you remember, it was called Medang before and by all accounts busy.

Anyway no worries dead and buried now and now too many disco/live band/clubs in Patong, thai or farang theme and more and more thai themed stuff popping up in Phuket Town.

Next it will be overdoze with the pool/snooker theme thing

Paddy that place was open for about 2 weeks they had guys out promoting free drinks for laydees but didnt get much interest. Im sure the guy spent a fortune on the place have u seen inside???? Lush modern style sofas and neon blue lighting it really is impressive. I think the guys done a show for the pink lady staff party in phuket town then decided to close it. As you say it would make an excellent bar! (i think its up for grabs)
