Hello,

A cryotherapy topical creme or gel is a 'Cool Therapy' pain relieving product that would be used more for acute conditions or injuires that have just occurred. It is usually applied post-massage, unless you are doing point therapy on the specific injury. A 'Warm Therapy' pain gel or creme would be used more for chronic conditions or basic aches and pains that do not go away. It is also mainly used for post-massage as well as point therapy. The pain gels or cremes are nice for therapists because they can sale the products to their clients, which will allow them to bring it home with them and it will add value to your overall service, as long as it's a quality product that you yourself trust.

Which Works Best?

Different products work best for different people.

Personally, I prefer Biofreeze. It's simply what works best on my pain. When I use it on clients I apply it after the massage only for spot treatment....mainly to ease any tenderness.

If I want something to use during the massage, I use Jason's Tea Tree Cooling Gel since it has a nice consistency for massaging.

I've used just about every product out there. Cryoderm was a little too strong for me....I broke out in a rash after using it on my neck but one of my co-workers swears by it.

Biofreeze vs. Cryoderm

Cryoderm is, indeed, very powerful, that is because it contains not only 3 times more of the active ingrediant (menthol 10% vs 3.5% in BF), but also it has other beneficial and century-proven herbal ingredients that reduce inflammation, bruising, swelling and speeds up the body's natural healing, beside blocking the pain!!!
Also, BF contains some harmful ingredients, that I feel bad about using on my patients long-term, as one of them (isopropyl alcohol) can cause birth defects, kidneys, liver, skin toxicity and nerve damage. As a responsible practitioner I feel obligated to provide the best care and products that are safe long-term.

I prefer the Cryoderm gel myself. I find that it is stronger and works better for me. I haven't used it in my practice, just for home use for myself and my husband.

Another that I have heard of is called China Gel. Supposed to work great also.

To cause those kinds of problems, you would have to go absolutely crazy with Biofreeze applications, and your clients would have to continue the craziness at home. Unless they are allergic to one or more of the components, the risk is negligible.

I actually find that the warming Sombra is the best for my practice. I highly suggest you try it, if you haven't yet.
