While some types of viruses become relatively stable 'species' the vast majority are constantly mutating. Most mutations are NOT successful (i.e. die out), and many are not hazardous to humans.

There are many fascinating books written for the lay person if you want to learn more.

Well i don't blame the pharmecutical companies as much as I blame WHO and the media, both of whom whipped the hapless idiots like fuji into a frenzy over something that turned out to be not that much more serious than a cold , unless you were latino perhaps.

The drug companies were catching a lot of heat as I recall for not producing the vaccines fast enough. I was in a high risk group , living with someone with a compromised immune system ( undergoing chemo) so I got the shot but I think Canada ended up with 10 million excess doses, 5 of which they gave to Mexico and 5 to those wankers at WHO.

After creating needless panic over first bird and now swine flu is anyone likely to listen to WHO on anything ?

Yeah, good thing SARs didn't happen and we will never have public health issues. For my money, I'm happy the WHO over-reacted. It's an easy scape goat to complain about the cost of health, but you know, one of the reasons Canada did okay during the Spanish flu outbreak is we had a solid public health system. Conspiracy theories aside (and I will have to dig around about the HIV one), give me proactive health care any day of the week.

I think more to the point - does anyone care whether they have or not. In the six years since WHO's dire warning concerning bird/avian flu worldwide deaths have been less than 300. In other words lightening is a bigger threat.

Put me down as someone who thinks that WHO is run by attention junkies who must feel that their funding is dependent on being in the limelight. Unfortunately they have cried wolf too many times and their credibility took a beating. Imagine if all the money we wasted on this had been spent on cancer?
