BNI- good marketing/networking venue, or not worth it?

We got a letter today (from someone we do not know, but could be someone from the larger Chamber we belong to), inviting us to attend a "BNI High Velocity Chapter Visitors Day" Wednesday after next. Something about the name (initials) seems vaguely familiar, but I cannot recall where the reference comes from.

Anyone with any experience/input about this deal?

I haven't tried BNI myself, but I found this thread from 2007. People's experiences really vary. It largely depends on the group. Some people find it generates a lot of business, others not so much:

I also think it depends on how comfortable you are networking & marketing yourself. Although I've never met you, your posts indicate that you have both those gifts. Am I right? If yes, BNI might be a good fit for you.

Interesting thread, Blisss- thanks! I agree with those who say it all depends on the group as well as your own personality. Do I seem to have the gifts of networking and marketing myself? Well, maybe so. I used to be *incredibly* shy. I guess now, since I've had the unusual opportunity to immerse myself slowly into this whole "business owner" thing, maybe I feel more confident. I've had 3 years of being his "biggest cheerleader" before having to start "cheering for myself". And for me, it's more "we" than "me"- I'm not just selling my own services, but our business as a whole. Doesn't feel quite so much like "tooting my own horn" so to speak, I guess.

After reading the thread you linked to, I've realized that since we already have "links" with folks in both Chambers, but not the BNI group, we'd be better off sticking with our Chambers, and maybe expand from there later. Thanks!
