Boardwalk Empire vs The Sopranos

WAIT for the poll! It is MULTIPLE choice!

Unfortunately the HBO's 'Boardwalk Empire' is reminding me of 'The Pacific'.

Both of these mini-series do NOT compare :frown:well to their 'prequels' from the same producers. ('The Sopranos' and 'Band of Brothers')

Many points to be made, but first a trivial muse:

While Steve Buscemi (Nucky Thompson) is a great actor, I am having a bit of trouble accepting women throwing themselves at him:neutral: (NOT for money) with his lizard face and Donald Duck voice. On the other hand, I can sorta get it when Big Tony Soprano was attracting the babes.

I love Boardwalk Empire!! I'm so thrilled for Buscemi. He is a grrreat actor and he brings all his charisma and character from prior roles to this one. I prefer the intelligent classiness and sweetness of Nucky to Tony's loud crass moronic sounding character. I just never liked The Sopranos

Oddly enough, James Gandolfini would have been perfect match (physically) for the real Nucky Thompson.

As far as the series, Nucky is the ONLY male character that really grabs and gets enough screen time. The women are excellent but peripheral to the 'plot' (which drifts all over the place).

There should be a hell of a lot more of Capone, Rothstein, Luciano and Nucky's gang including 'Omar' (great black actor from 'The Wire')

While Gretchen Mol's full nudity was great, this would be better titled (so far) 'The Tragedies of Women Caught Up in the World of Gangsters' sub-titled
('But They are Handy for Whacking Your Incessantly Drunken, Brutal Husband After He Beats You to Miscarry')


A valid and good drama, but over done sub-plots in this context, and not what I turned on the HD for.

while boardwalk is interesting, it is NOT the same quality as the sopranos. That show had "it" and didn't use BS like Lost did to keep you coming back for more.

I can/could understand women going for Tony, not only was he a powerful man, but typcial alpha male mentality. Hell, I've seen women go for those types who have no power or money.

The thing about boardwalk is that they've got the era down pat. The mannerisms, the locale, everything.

The best line so far was to the effect of: those blithering idiots just passed prohibition. If they hadn't? I highly doubt there'd be so much organized crime in the US today.

^^^^ I remember reading somewhere that when the ending finally aired, and the music cut out, the phone lines were flooded with people thinking their cable feed cut out lol....

As the producer/writer said "life is full of uncertainties so don't expect a pat hollywood ending" and he didn't disappoint.....

If you think about it they really didn't have much choice. They wanted to end the series, but also wanted to leave it open for a possible sequel. They couldn't just have tony go on his merry way, what kind of an ending is that? They couldn't kill him and his family off, then the sequel couldn't happen.

I completely disagree with the masses and think that BWE is much better then the Sopranos.
Nucky is a great character and definitely doesn't get all the women ... A drunken washed up show girl and a widow are not what I would call women throwing themselves at him.
I think from what I have seen this series will only continue to get better and better and as it is its still the best show on HBO

The thing that gets me about the show is how the characters operate with total impunity to the law and how Nucky has this attitude that "he's doing it all for the people" not for himself. Yet here he is, living on the top floor of The Ritz......but really, he's not much different than most of the top 1% these days. The powerbrokers these days just do it with a pen instead of a gun......
