Is it ever acceptable to completely sever relations with family?
Personally I don't get along with any of my family members and any attempt by me to be civil usually turns into a shouting match. So I am thinking that it time to just tell them all to go fuck themselves and never speak to them again.

Would you think about doing the same?

After some 30 plus years of working at it and bending and bending and being the "bad guy" whenever every one else was unhappy (because obviously it always HAD to be my fault) I'm tired of bending.
The next step for me is obviously stepping back or finally breaking.
I'm thinking maybe its time to seek Professional Help.

That's not necessarily true of all families. There are WAY too many dysfunctional ones out there to make a blanket statement.

To be honest, when all is said and done we all die alone so....

Anyhow, to the op:

yes, it is perfectly acceptable to break all ties with your family (as was told to me by a shrink). The reason being is that if they are determental to your health or happiness then why continue to put yourself at risk?

We have tried with Mrs. CG's mother and sister... its like going up against a brick wall... Its to the point now, where we don't associate with them at all... (Note: there are deep seeded underlying issues as well...) We don't even see them at Christmas. :shock:

Her brother is pretty cool, and is in the same boat as us, ironically enough. We'll be going to their home for Christmas this year as it is their turn to host... we take turns hosting family get togethers... :great:

My parents (rip) I loved dearly.

My mother gave birth to 3 children of which I am the youngest. The eldest passed away a few hours after birth and the middle-child, who is a decade older than I am is a sorry excuse for a human-being.

I buy the newspaper on Wednesday and Saturday and go straight to the obituaries in hope to see if the devil has died. When it does happen, I'll be there to take a dump on the head-stone.

Wow dude, too feel that much hatred towards a brother he must have really done something horrible to the family.

I am taken aback by the hatred of some of the posts here towards their family members. I guess I am one of the lucky ones and have a great extended family that all seem to get along fairly well at gatherings.

My sibling asked me once, would I donate a kidney if asked to? My reply was I'll watch you die slowly and painfully, and I'll keep my organs. You are right the things that were done were dispicable. If my sibling died mysteriously, I'd be a suspect.

There is nothing like family. No one can replace the part of your life that a family can.
Its true, sometimes they are a pain to deal with, however, at the end of the day, they are who raised you. Whether they did to your liking or not, telling them to fcuk off would not be the nicest thing to say.

Give yourself some space and give them space too. Step back and relax and think what you are about to do. In my opinion, just give it some time. Yes, some MORE time. If needed, seek professional help, but never tell them to fuck off.

How would you like it if your child ever tells you to fuck right off ? You may be strong now and say you dont care, but trust me, somewhere a little of you does.

I couldn't choose my family, but I've chosen my friends well. My parents and sister are deceased, and the other guy is dead as far as I'm concerned.

I've had my lawyer and the police after him for several situations, and the devil has just realized that I consider myself an only child.

Maybe as you both grow old the relationship may change although based on your posts it sounds very unlikely but time has a way of healing big wounds.

I have a sister that hasn't spoken to me at least going on 5 years now. It was all over a car that was purchased for me by my father for some renovation jobs I helped the old man out with. Only during the holidays I think of making the call but I haven't had the mustard to actually complete the call. I think I would lose it on her if I was rejected. Oh well, maybe one day.
