Business Model Problem

I am primarily looking for answers from people who are working in South San Francisco Bay Area.

I have finished a 100 hour Swedish class and got my license from the state. I figured with my education situation and the fact that I can't work during the business hours, it would be the best for me to conduct a business out of my home, giving services in peoples homes, during late hours and in the weekends.

I've looked into Sunnyvale and Saratoga and Los Gatos for business permits. So far, none of them allow any massage business to be conducted from or in a house, apparently for zoning and health reasons.

Los Gatos has given me a partial OK and I am suspecting in further inquiries they're gonna say no too.

Does this mean that nobody is doing any such business at homes in this area? And what is your general suggestion if you are a practitioner in this area?

When do you plan to complete the rest of your training? 100 hours of Swedish sounds like the just first part of a massage therapy training program. I'm surprised that a new practitioner with so little training could obtain a license (of any kind) in CA. Did you have any training in anatomy and physiology, or in pathology? Are you still in school?

It sounds like you wish to practice in a way that the current laws do not permit. Therefore you are faced with a choice: practice legally in some other way than you first imagined, or practice illegally and risk the consequences. There are MANY other ways to practice, so open yourself to other possibilities.

Jason, if I recall correctly, CA still has licensing by municipality, and not a state requirement. It could be that 100 hrs is all that is needed for a license in those cities. But, of course, I don't live in CA so can't say for sure.

oh that made me laugh , in ontario canada we have to take 2200hrs which worked out to about $16,000. ++

Don't know about now, but when my husband and I visited the Big Sur area several years ago, a therapist I met there told me they didn't require ANY formal massage education. There are a lot of cities here in CA that have low requirements which is one reason I think that so many therapist's in this state were against the regulation b/c it would require 500 hours.

Anyway, sorry to hijack the thread. To the original question.....

Ray, I don't know the laws up there, but if that's what the city hall folks told you then they would be correct. If a therapist tells you different, then that means they are skirting the law. It's best to go with information from the source and not second hand info.
