Can Massage Therapists Make a Living
depends on your idea of "livin'!
I live in a large metro city and I checked 20-30k before taxes. I wish I could find a job where I go in, do 4 to five in a row and go home every day, but I have not found a spa like this. There is sooooooooo much down time that I was not told in school. Of course saturdays rock and fridays, sundays, but its those other days sitting around reading Star magazine that can make you crazy! Unfortunately, everywhere I have worked, the other mt's never want to trade, which would at least be a good use of time. Hopefully my next spa will be better. Here's a tip though....A lot of spas you may work in(or chiros) need you to be "on call". Say you call in for the day, and there is no one scheduled, but you know they will, so you are dependent upon your cell phone waiting for an appointment. Tip for taxes: Your cell phone has now become a work cost and therefor a deduction! ;D Last year I saved all my cell phone bills and got back over $600 for it! Also if you decide to belong to an organization like AMTA(which let me also tell you in my opinion is a complete waste of $250-but a chiro I worked at made me have my own insurance) you can deduct that as well along with any clothes you have to buy for work, scrubs, whatever, just save your reciept. Also, since you are in school, when you do your taxes next year, you can take the "lifetime learning credit" two years in a row basically resulting in getting all your money back on your taxes. AND if you have taken out a student loan, you can also get deduct the interest, mine was only $85, but hey, who doesn't want $85? OK, can anyone tell I really got into learning about taxes this year?? With all these tips, my return was for$1600, not too shabby
This brings me to another tip, some jobs for mt's are known as contract jobs where they dont take out taxes, and you are responsible for paying them yourself, I stongly suggest not doing this. Too much trouble. Anyways, sorry this was so long, but I hope it helps! Massaging to make a good amount of money is hard work, but possible. Know your limits, dont be bullied by bosses to take on more than you can and dont burn yourself out!
