Cancer Care

Hi all

I have been deeply affected by the amount of people I know who have been affected by cancer over the last month and feel completely helpless. It got me wondering if I could volunteer myself to give reiki, massage or aromatherapy to those who are suffering, maybe through hospital or hospice care.

I was wondering if any of you on the forums did a similar thing and if so, how I could go about it. ANy information would be gratefully received.

I volunteered at a local hospice a few years ago, and did half a day once a week (reflexology). There was also another therapist doing aromatherpy. We could not work on the residents, but the day patients really enjoyed it. Neither of us were able to work on the cancer ward in the main hospital as we did not have nursing training. I stopped when I developed breast cancer (!). Have not gone back, as too busy working in my own practice. Recommend it to anyone though. Contact your local hospice and let them know what you have to offer and they may offer you an interview.

Our local hospital does use volunteers to give reflexology and aromatherapy to its cancer patients, so it's always worth enquiring there.

Hi Pooky,

I am a volunteer with a local charity called Coping with Cancer North East - I do massages on the ward at a local hospital.

I got my contact through college a while back - but if you do a google search for Cancer Care I think one of the bigger sites holds details about local initiatives. Good luck & for my experience I find it very worthwhile.

Thanks for all your replies. I will need to get my first aid course out of the way so I can go back to being a full member of IFPA and get my insurance cover before I start but at least you have given me some pointers for contacts.
