Career Coaching

How many of you have used a career coach (a live person, either in person or on the phone, not a seminar, web course, etc) for advice and development of your business? Did it work? Why? How expensive was it?
I ask because I recently came across coachconnie.com. She is a coach for small business and service professionals like us. She charges $167 an hour for consulting, and have a "boot camp coming up" that is a live confernce call over 8 weeks, limited to 12 participants, for $400 I believe. I am wondering what this is all about and is it worth it?

i think you might do as well, if not better, to look through the business/marketing thread here.

i've wasted so much money on marketing and advertisement, and if i'd taken to heart what was said here about other who've wasted money, instead of trying it out to see, i'd have saved about $4500 in advertisement my first year that didn't bring in much, except maybe 2 regular clients.

i'm not sure about coach connie, does she have an MT background? i would be much more apt to sign up for something like that with someone who's actually in the business.

She's been a massage therapist (I believe her husband still is) and is now a business coach, with lots of online and by-phone materials. I have not hired her, but she does live in my area and I have heard her speak (very interesting if a little enthusiastic for my taste!). The last time she spoke to our local MT association, as a thank-you gift for our local MT group hosting her, she gave us all access to her e-manual, a free consult, and a big packet of info and exercises. It was interesting and useful and I still consult those materials.

We have a life & business coach in the referral group I belong to. She's not specific to any one profession and it isn't consulting. What she does is help you work through any issues you may have come up in your business or personal life. She helps set realistic goals and holds you accountable for working towards those goals.

I also have a personal interest in coaching. My husband is in school for life and business coaching now and we've worked through some issues I've had. It probably isn't the best idea to have your husband as a coach though! I think I'd do better with someone with a more objective view.

I do have to say, however, that $167 an hour sounds a little steep. My husband's mentor coach (not from the referral group) is $300 a month which gives him 3 one hour sessions per month. He's been coaching for several years and has been extremely helpful. I'm pretty sure the coach from my group is priced right around there.

I guess my advice is to try out coaching and see for yourself the benefits. It definitely isn't for everyone but the good coach will help you determine if it is right for you.

She was an MT from what I can tell... I have a chair massage video from her... was NOT impressed in its content.

She does have an email newsletter/ezine you can sign up for... I'd sign up for that and if her style/information seems to appeal to you, then I'd go for the more expensive classes.

I get the ezine and a lot of the information I get is the SAME thing I get from here....but here we get lots of feedback and some twists on the ideas for FREE! Gotta love THAT!!! Plus you don't get the high pressure hype to sign up or buy expensive services or products like you do on the ezine....

i think it depends why you want/need one as to how it will work for you. i don't think you necessarily need someone who is in the MT business. if you find the right marketing person, they can really be fantastic. the thing i'm not sure i like about the connie thing is that you have to share your time with her? if there are 12 participants, how much of her time are you going to get for your specific needs? how customized is this session going to be for you personally? for that price, i'd want to deal with someone one on one who can take the time to listen and ask questions so that they can give you a more personal/customized session.

Heck, I wanna make $167 an hour!!! I have thought of doing something like this for new MT's... but $167 an hour is REEEDICKULUS!!

I am in the process of becoming a certified business coach. I have used coaching in the past and it has made an amazing difference in my massage practice (growing from a 1 person operation, to a 9 person operation).

Here is a deal for you and anyone else interested:
