hey,
certified massage practitioner here (700 hr. spa therapist certificate), have gained much practice, have a good handle on physiology, and I keep up with continuing ed.
recently was doing a 10 min. chair massage on a woman who was pregnant (I can't remember how far along she was, but was somewhere in the middle). I was doing some shiatsu type work down the erectors with my thumbs and fists (flat) incl. the lower back (i.e. static compressions, sinking in over about 5 seconds). I was being slow and conservative with the pressure, but was still sinking into the muscle.
My coworker, who is RMT, saw me doing this and advised me after the massage to avoid the low back for pregnant women, especially "deep" work. It may have looked like I was going very deep due to my body mechanics (I was in a deep lunge for example), but I don't think I was going especially "deep". Moreover, I'm not entirely sure that work on the low back erectors should necessarily be contraindicated during pregnancy. (of course the client was well aware that she could advise me about uncomfortable pressure)
any guidance for me?
p.s. it's my first post, thanks in advance for welcoming me to this great resource!
