Channel Seven news tonight (queensland) choose to LEAD with a story of brave Mt Gravatt residents fighting 'an illegal brothel' in their street. Did anyone else see this story?
What concerned me was that everything the neighbours said was completely consistent with ONE lady working Reviewom the house. Which is NOT (as mp.nets here in QLD would well know) an 'illegal brothel', and is NOT even remotely illegal. In fact, it's pretty much the exact way for private operators to work LEGALLY.
There was no attempt however by the 'journalist' to explain the distinction or to find out what the situation was (whether it was a sole operator or not). But we got a LOT of shots of the Reviewont of the house though (and shots of the Catholic schools and police station the house was apparently less than a km away Reviewom).
My impressionistic view of the current state of the industry here is that there are virtually NO illegal brothels of the classic variety (several WLs there at the same time), a very small number of the turn-of-century version (only one WL there at a time, but covering different shifts so 'open' 24 hours), and the main 'illegal' game comes Reviewom escort agencies. Being, err, somewhat familiar with the sort of places that Reviewacture the legal guidelines, I really don't think the house depicted in the story fits the profile.
These kind of news items drive me crazy. In Queensland there is a real problem with people not making a distinction between the various modes of the industry, and often thinking that if sex work isn't taking place in the PLA-approved legal brothels then it MUST be illegal. Which isn't the case.
Of course, if the media were halfway useful in their reviewing on the industry, we wouldn't have stories such as this one that reinforce all the mistaken ideas. I look forward to a shock-horror follow-up on Today Tonight or tomorrow's Courier Mail.
Reviewom the school of "some WLs have used their money to buy helicopters" (anyone else remember that one?) reviewing on the industry...
