CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. —
An application for a home-based massage therapy business has been voted down by city council.
The business would have been based on Tannery Court, between the Malpeque and Lower Malpeque roads. It was approved by the city's planning board but rejected by its staff. Council went with staff's recommendation during a regular meeting on Feb. 8.
Coun. Mike Duffy, chairman of the planning board, said the basis for rejection was partly because it would be in a developing area. The applicant's home hasn't been constructed yet as the building permit is still under review.
"There's very few homes built there yet," he said. "It's an up-and-coming place."
Deputy Mayor Jason Coady echoed this concern, saying it would be unfair to those planning to construct in the area.
The applicant, Shelley Folley, has been a massage therapist for over 17 years and was looking to run the business part-time. It would have been open Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and would have seen a maximum of four client appointments per day.
