City of Regina administration is recommending that massage parlours in the city be licensed as a way to ensure the safety of workers, patrons and owners.
The recommendation to license establishments comes with a slew of additional conditions.
A report from the city outlines a plan for the businesses which included requirements for workers including: Criminal record checks, completion of an education program, proof of age and eligibility to work in Canada. Also, it recommends that the Regina Police Service (RPS) conduct an approval process for the establishments.
License fees would amount to $730 a year, with $630 going to the police for their role in regulating the establishments and $100 going toward the licence itself.
This process would also come with reporting, health and safety requirements as well as a limit on what hours the business can operate.
The report states that police believe when operators and workers are “required to provide proof of their identity, the level of safety increases.”
