I was there in May'06 and stayed at Haikou...just go to their sauna and you'll be asked if you wish to get a girl for a massage, clean and good rooms with bath attached, I've got a cutie and had a good time! I'm actually going to be in Hainan in the next few months... probably staying in Haikou. I'm really hoping to make a trip around the island and see Sanya too, but I couldn't justify the extra cost of flying into Sanya and staying there since the island isn't all that big.

I don't know yet what hotel I'll be in... I've heard that the Bao Hua Harbour View, Golden Sea View and Yehai are pretty good and near the water, and the prices look really cheap by western standards... also saw the Sun City and the... Kinsley or something? Any of these to avoid or favor over others?

For Hainan, stay in Haikou if you are looking for girls. Go to Sanyo if you are looking for nice beaches. There really isn't much in Hainan or reason to go there anymore. Red Lake is dead as are nearly all the decent BBS. Used to be lots of activity around the Haikou hotel but even that is dead. I wouldn't go unless you know the ropes.
