Just looking for some feedback...client was scheduled for his monthly one hour session this Friday. He emailed to ask if his wife could come instead because he had triple bypass surgery on 1/18. He's doing great and has been told 4-6 weeks till he's back to semi-normal (his words) and 6-8 months before normal. He wants to know when I think he could come back for his massage (normally semi-deep to deep work on his shoulders and hips, relaxation everywhere else). I'll definitely have him ask his doctor but wanted to get some more input from fellow therapists.

I'd most definitely defer to his doctor on that one. In fact, I'd probably ask him to bring a release form signed by his doctor (with appropriate instructions, if the doctor gives any) when he is ready to start receiving bodywork again.

He is likely to be on anticoagulants for quite a while, so you may have to completely change your sessions with him. Definitely no heavy-duty work the first few times, and be cautious about circulatory strokes too. The whole game has changed, so throw out your old session plans and look at his body and its needs with fresh eyes. It is no longer the body that you knew before.

I would get a referral from his MD or at least speak with him/her about client care. It is always better to co-manage when possible with these types of circumstances.

I have found that my post-surgical clients bodies are complimented by a lot of flathand, holding-type work. One hand above and one below the joint - pulling slow and light but firm, with minimal lotion or oil. I move very very very slow with most of these clients. Of course, your personal assessment will let you know what is best for your client.

Much of the work will depend on your skill set.

If you do a good job, the MD may refer you more post-surgical clients, so that is another reason to co-manage when possible.
