I actually have lupus (19 years) and so can relate to you what works for me. With my scleroderma (a rheumatic disease like lupus) my worse symptoms incl. joint pain, muscle weakness, gastro problems, and fatigue. I had a heart attack in 2000 and have had chemo for the lungs. A flareup is when one or more of the symptoms gets worse. This can last from days to much longer.
Each person is different. When my joints flare, I prefer ice and maybe lighter massage. I also warn my therapist to watch all stretches and movements with the joints. With the muscle weakness, I actually like a stronger touch. With gastro problems flaring, I can't lay flat, either prone or supine. If my lungs are hurting, I can lay supine but with a little propping up. Of course I asked my doc after the heart attack when I could get a massage.
Now, if I am not flaring, I like a strong deep massage. Anything goes then.
The main thing is....ask the client. Most people who have any illness that changes their way of life are very knowledgable about the disease and what works for them. If you ever have a doubt, just ask. I worked on a 60 year old lady once with fibro and I was really getting down on her. I asked her if she was ok as I was already touching the table thru her body. She replied, "Honey, if you can touch the floor, I think that would just about do it".
