Hi, i had a client last night, and wondered if anyone had one like this aswell?
he was very sceptical about reflexology, his girlfreind had booked it for him.
But he expected me to be able to diagnose illnesses for him, when i explaned we don't do that as i am not a doctor, he just sat there with a stern face which made me feel uncomfatble, even though he was nearly asleep at the end, he said he was still sceptical and did not see the pint and said it does not work.
i came way feeling crap.
has anyone else had crints that make them feel low???
how do you handle them

You can't win em all. There are quite a few sceptics around. Like other therapies it is holistic and depends upon a lot of other factors, diet, exercise, work, lifestyle, hobbies - there is no magic bullet. I explain that a series of treatments is necessary for any improvements to be noticed.

We are not here to diagnose, however if I feel something on the foot I usually mention it. If a reflex feels painful, congested, or puffy, or crunchy I try to get the client to give me feedback and ask if they have tension in that area.

If you pick up negativity then protect yourself, white light is good, shaking off the hands and washing hands up to elbows following treatment usually sorts that out. Think of the positives about the treatment - if he was nearly asleep he was relaxed, that is a big part of the healing process.

Develop strategies for dealing with 'difficult clients'. You probably don't know the story of why his girlfriend booked him in, but I am sure he returned to his girlfriend a more chilled out person than before.

I'm not starting my reflexology training until August, but I do practise Reiki. I'm often met with scepticism. I'm quite relaxed about it tho. I don't feel that is my job to make the person I'm giving treatment to a believer - they can come to that conclusion (or not!) in their own time, at their own pace. Of course it makes it easier if the person you are treating comes to you of their own free will and with an open mind, but I usually just tell people who have difficulty with the concept to just 'try' and have an an open mind, and that at the very least what I will do will be incredibly relaxing for them. And give them an idea of what may happen after the session as blockages/energy release and clear.

I know reiki is very different to reflexology (And I cant wait to find out exactly how!), but I've lost count of the number of people who came to me just to 'give it a try', and have been wowed enough with the session and what they experience after, to consider themselves 'converts' come back for more Just focus on what you need to do, and let everything else happen naturally is my advise.

Sceptics can also be a blessing - for every sceptic that would not admit any benefit under any circumstances there is one that enthusiastically tells everyone about their experience and how they have benefited even though they thought it was a load of rubbish before they had the treatment.

When I was a student one of my work colleagues went out of his way to tell me what a load of clap trap reflexology was - 6 months later he's asked for help preparing for an important job interview to overcome his chronic nerves. He sailed through the interview with no nerves at all and is an enthusiastic advocate for reflexology.

I hope the next sceptic you treat is a blessing in disguise - or even the chap you treated this time round !

I think we've all had clients like that. I always think it's a mistake when someone else books an appointment for their boyfriend/friend/mum/whoever. It's vital for a person to choose therapy when *they* want it, and choose the type of therapy and the therapist that they feel drawn to. Occasionally it works out really well and you gain a new client, but sometimes they turn up very sceptical feeling they have been pushed into a treatment they don't want or need, and it seems like that's what happened to you. Don't take it personally. When this happens, just give the best treatment you possibly can, then sit back and let them decide. For every one person like this there are many many more who will actively seek out your therapy and be clients you can have a two way exchange with.

Huh ungrateful so and so, wouldn't it be good if we could tell our 'normal' doctors that we don't believe what they are saying or prescribing for us will work...go to the docs with one ailment, get a prescription then possibly suffer from a dozen lousy side effects With reflexology we are not causing any harm and at least giving a time of pure relaxation.

Thought I'd just posted, but not sure what happened! So, hope this doesn't come through twice.

I've had a few people like this. Two became regular long-term clients. One of them came for weekly treatments for a year because he enjoyed the treatments so much.

I used to get very nervous treating sceptical people and then decided that I can only do what I can do and it's up to them whether or not it suits them, whether they change their mind, whether they come back etc. They can go away and tell people I was rubbish and it didn't work, but it doesn't matter as it doesn't mean that the people they talk to will believe them.

The majority of my clients are very open to reflexology so I don't worry about the few that aren't. It's very nice when the sceptics change their minds though!
