From the article:
The officers found him with a foot-long piece of wood trim with a knife-like point in one hand and a cardboard box in the other.
"Come get me, f-----," he said.
The f----s came and got him with pepper spray. If I'm a cop and don't feel like risking getting stabbed by some POS 8 yr old with a sharp stick, then I'll use whatever I have that puts me and others at the least risk.
1. Gun....probably overKILL.
2. Nightstick...get's me too close, I have a date night with the wife tonight and my son's baseball game tomorrow. A bit risky.
3. Cuffs...gets me too close again....
4. Taser...if he had one...might work.
5. Pepper spray...non lethal, keeps me at a distance, least chance for permanent damage to the kid with the sharp stick.
I'd personally have gone with a Taser had it been available. Less chance of the pepper spray getting in my own eyes.
Read the article, this kid was displaying very dangerous behavior. If I'm the cop, I'm not going to endanger myself and others by thinking that he's just acting out and is actually a "nice child that wouldn't hurt a fly". Cops have to assume the worst and protect themselves and the public that isn't acting like a maniac. And before you say that it's their job and they are getting paid for it...and that they knew what they were getting into when the took the job. I'm sure they did know and should be praised for doing the job even knowing that its dangerous and that they won't be appreciated for it.
