Controversial opinion (not mine!)....

Hello everyone

I have been interested in studying reflexology for while now, and I just had some physio and was talking to the lady about my plans to study massage and reflexology and she says she cannot accept refelxology as a valid therapy as due to her medical training she believes there is no way you can affect the rest of the body by working any areas of the feet.

I know this is a controversial comment, I would just like to know peoples opinions on this?

I always try to remind myself that we live an very narrow minded and sometimes arrogant society, believing everything that we are taught about modern medicine. For centuries Eastern cultures have used used these ancient techniques and are happy to incorporate them into their modern medicial disciplines. We all evolve at different rates and different experiences affect us differently why should healing be any different? It is a hugely frustrating argument, but in these cases I would just smile sweetly and say I am glad they have found what works for them.

Quite an arrogant viewpoint IMO. Basically she is saying, if I don't know about it or understand it, then it cannot be true.

Ha! I find these grandiose sweeping comments such as 'My Medical Training' rather amusing. Medical Training? Forgive me for shattering your esteemed physiotherapist's halo but a physiotherapist is just a glammed up anatomy graduate! If she is trying to align her profession with Medicine then she is deluded. In my opinion.

Having been married to a medical practitioner I am very familiar with their undergraduate medical training... and how long they spent on each topic. And what they didn't cover. Having, myself, done first year anatomy and physiology (yes, no big deal) I am also aware of what they leave out in these fields.

My point, I guess is that having a professional qualification which allows you to treat muscles and joints and impress folk at dinner parties with your ability to name muscles does not mean that you have any authority to mock therapies of which you have no understanding... nor I suspect... knowledge.

Tell that to your physiotherapist!!!

I feel sorry for physios.

I am told that they take the brightest students (it is incredibly hard to get on the course) and then they proceed to remove their brains.

We get lots of people at our Centre who have not gained relief from physiotherapy and they get better with massage and osteopathy.

Sorry, not wanting to slag off other professions, but really, what does she know?
