Cortisone injections: how do we feel about them

Hi All,

With a holistic view in mind, I was wondering everyones opinion on cortisone injections as an anti-inflammatory and for pain relief?

I think even without a holistic view cortisone is not good for you and can only be used for a very short period at a time.

However, I have a friend with a chest condition - he gets cortisone once or twice a year when it get very bad and it is the only thing that gives him any relief at those times.

So, I suppose if somebody is suffering and this is the only thing that works you have to take the good with the bad! If there is an alternative, that might be better.

The title of this post bemused me!

As much as I try to avoid medication, I very occasionally have to have a cortisone injection - I have to say that they are not pleasant to receive, and I doubt that anyone would have them unless there was no other option and they provided very real symptom relief.

Like Supersub, I'm also intrigued on why Jobelle thinks they are bad.

Cortisone is a steroid hormone which is also naturally produced as cortisol by the adrenal glands in response to stress. It is part of the flight or fight response so therefore is very important.

But...

High cortisol levels can interfere with the liver re: blood glucose balance and the suppresses the thyroid gland functioning by interfering with the conversion of T4 to active T3. Increased risk of CVD, interferes with bone density, lowers immune response.

Eventually when levels get too high it leads to burnout and conditions such as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and even worse impaired immune conditions.

I guess my one jab every 3-5 years to get a crippling muscle out of spasm isn't going to do that much harm.......

I Think I will be going soon too for one.

I have also put my shoulder muscles into a serious spasm and am getting no joy with anything else atm.

I have people booked in for massage the next few days...don't know how I will get thru them.

Thank you Patchouli - for answering that - you said that much better then I could have. Suppose, with all medications there are side effects and with cortisone I have only heard bad sides. I was just surfing and found so much on it - seems taking cortisone orally is worse than the injections. As in everything else, good and bad affects are reported, depends how bad on which site you are on.

Just to give you guys some more, I just found a thread on a tennis forum, has been going for a few years and has good, as well as bad stories and links to other websites on the same sunject.

flippen hec......I have them every six months in my knees and the relief they bring is enormous.....although extremely unleasant to recieve Im so looking forward to my fix next week.
Im afraid Im in denial about the side effects and my head is dug very deeply in the sand and I cant hear all this bad news about this wonderful magic drug, so only reading this post with one eye and thats full of sand.

Head out the sand for a moment please! Don't worry - rush off for your next fix!
Sometimes we read about side effects and then find out that it is 1 in a million chance, or the people doing the test made a mistake, or it is not as bad as they thought! Maybe what I see as bad you don't have a problem with because of the relief it brings to you! If we have to adhere to all the warnings on medicine we would all be doing without.

So, you go have your fix and I'll say no more..........
