DEATH BY MASSAGE? Whenever a person travels abroad, usually within Asia, they enjoy getting massages done. In many countries, including India, massaging of the body is considered to be a unique and crucial aspect of tourism. From addressing issues in specific points in the body to releasing overall tension, a massage can work wonders when done in a correct manner and by a professional. In Thailand, however, massage sessions purportedly claimed the lives of two persons. One of them was a Thai singer, and another was a tourist from Singapore.
According to news reports, the two victims had visited massage parlours in Thailand, after which their health condition deteriorated significantly and they succumbed to what is being called 'neck twisting' massages. The two separate cases have shocked people around the world, including doctors and health experts.
The first victim was a 20-year-old Thai folk singer Chayada Prao-hom. She was found dead on the morning of December 8, prompting investigations. News reports suggest she had been suffering from health complications after a series of 'neck twisting' massages in Udon Thani city. It is believed that Chayada had been updating fans and followers about her health on social media, after she had visited the massage parlour in October. Since then, she had visited the place for multiple massages to relieve her of her shoulder pain. But, the treatments only aggravated her health problems.

Apparently, a few days after receiving the first massage, the singer started to feel numbness spreading through her body. She took to bed, and updated her followers on Facebook regarding this development. Consecutive sessions with the masseuse only deteriorated her health condition.
The South China Morning Post reported that Chayada stated in her November 6, 2024 post on Facebook that she had gone to the parlour for two sessions of 'a neck twist' and another massage with a 'heavy hand'.
Unfortunately for her, Chayada became paralytic within two weeks. "I want my story to be a lesson for those who like being massaged a lot. I must recover. I want to work already," one of her last posts before her untimely death read.
According to the hospital where she died, the singer suffered from a 'blood infection and brain swelling'. An investigation is underway to find out exactly what caused her demise, even though authorities found the parlour and its masseuses have proper licences.
