Craniosacral massage question

Hello,I've deiced my very favorite massge is craniosacral and I have a few questions.  What is it about this massage that makes it so relaxing?  What is being manipulated?  When my MT places one hand on my abdomin and the other on my lower back what exactly is he feeling?  He has told me he feels the flow of the cranial fluid but what exactly is this?  And if I try to do this to my husband am I going to feel anything or would I not know what I was looking for?  Make sense?  What is happening when he pulls on both of my ears?Thanks in advance for the answers!Debi

I love C.S.T. It was strage to learn it, some of us couldnt feel the "flow" i was lucky and could feel it. Basically,  craniosacral rhythm is brain generated fluid pulse that comes from the core of the brain down the spinal cord and back again. The body is 97% h20. This "flow" When your therapist puts his hand under you on your lumbrosacral junction and the other on your pubic bone, or another hold is the thoraic( torso/back) and your diaphram..he/she can actually feel the body sink into their hands and relax.. feel a pulse and maybe some floating... it helps them see where you are "holding" in your body// all of our bodies are connected to everything.. if you have a pulled neck muscle it can reach down tug the rhomboids(in between shoulder blades) and then on down the back to the hip and so on... so the mobility is important for balance. the sutures in the skull actually move (slightly) but move for expansion of the brain and it's fluids...The ear pull is effecting the sphenoid bone.. the butter fly bone behind your eyes, and the temporal bone.. on the side of the skull near ears...  a traction of the ears pulls the bones and the left and right hemispheres of the brain to expand and stretch the dividing line down the middle of the brain to expand and rebalance the sutures, bones and tissue to reduce TMJ, headaches, sinus pain and stress tension of the tempals... I know, it is a bit technical, but it works so I hope that this helped.. CST is good for relaxation.. ask your therapist to put you in STILL POINT IT IS AMAZING!!! the ultimate goo goo gaa rush ever... : ;Denjoy and let go.. the body will self correct itself where needed and CST helps our bodies do that..

Thank you..that was very informative!!  Ok, explain "still point" to me a little better. (please!)  I've read that it is when the craniosacral fluid comes to a stop.  How in the world can that happen?!  Would I know it if he has already done this?I can tell you that I get into a very deep relaxed state.  I don't fall asleep but I come very close.  My best friend doesn't understand why I would have a CST when I can have deep tissue instead.  I just cannot begin to explain how wonderful this feels.  The only reason I have deep tissue is because I have problems with my hips and lower back.  ANYWAY,    Thanks again!Debi

Craniosacral massage question

You are right, the fluid comes to a stop. There are phases of flexion (when the fluid is filling) and extension (the opposite) What it does is causes a rhythmic disorganization in the flow if the fluid.It can be done at the beginning of a session to encourage the central nervous system to respond or at the end to prepare the client to come back into reality so to speak.To enduce still point, I like to place my hands under the occipitals *(the bones at the base of the skull) palms "up" and the base of my thumbs on the occipitals... when i feel the pulse I squeeze slightly to stop the fluid and hold it.. what a ride... i can feel a therapeutic PULSE, like a heart beat/thump dont be scared (it freaked me out at first) just go with it, breath deep in and exhale the same.. let your body go. It takes you to a deeper level and you can stay there for up to 15 minutes.. NO MORE THAN 4 times a day though.. because the body regenerates the fluid and stopping it too often may not be good.. so there is a book I could recommend you can buy it at BORDERS.. also.. about your lower hip and back.. have your therapist release your scrotuberous/and sacrospinous ligaments and your psoas muscles major and minor. The psoas release  may be a bit awkward and a tad painful but it is SO WORTH IT!!! as a sufferer myself I have no more problems !!!!it is attached to the lower lumbars (t12 and 5 lumbars) on the posterior (back) and come forward to the inside of the lesser trochanter (inside of the femur socket into the hip socket)So.. just imagine putting your hands around a metal pole and pulling towrds you.. when these muscles are tight they YANK the lower back forward and make the hips and low back ACHE!!!I will warn you now, with great ease and gentleness.. your MT can make you feel so much better.. it kind of feels like low back menstral cramps or back labor... but breathe!!! and just wait and it will ease up.. a few sessions and you should see a huge improvement!!just a suggestion... (coming from an l5 degenerative disc sufferer) ;D ;D

Klowe,Thank you for all your answers.  I "think" that I am put into still point everytime.  My MT places his hands at the end of my skull and holds his fingers there.  Eventually my head relaxes and falls back.  Once he does this he then places his hands on my neck and does gentle stretches.  I usually get soooo sleepy and relaxed.  I absolutely love CST.  I wish I could have it everyday!    My MT calls me a "table junkie."   I will find the book you recommended.  I love learning all about this.Thanks again for the suggesstions on my back issues.  I will ask him what he does to my lower back.Debi

I just wanted to add this recent happening.Friday morning my 7 year old son woke up looking like "quasi moto" due to intense muscle spasms in his neck.  We iced throughout the day -- alternating sides.  By the evening he decided to let me work on him a bit so I pull out the table and proceeded to try and release the spasms, but they were just to tender to work.  So after 20 minutes of trying to get him to relax I decided to do some CST hoping the indirect work would help alleviate the pain.  Within a few minutes of starting the CST holds in the torso he had stopped "fighting" the work and relaxed into it and within ten minutes he had fallen completely and soundly asleep -- complete with snoring!!  LOL  CST is great stuff!!!!
