Current Nightlife in Patong

Two weeks ago Bangla Road and Soi Eric was quite thinning, even at Soi Tiger, lots of time the bargirls were sitting by the bars talking with each other rather than with customers. However, there seem to be quite a few of Asian tourists, mainly from Japan and South Korea, walking on Bangla mostly just looking. Maybe the absence of tuktuks is giving the illusion of a deserted street.

What's the situation in Patong now, has the customer returned?

Nope, still quiet. I guess as a guide to whats happening, tonight Soi Eric has the sound of the FA cup final over the sound system, and not music.

Is it quiter than what it normally would be this time of year? A report today says that for the first time in 11 years the balance on credit cards (UK) has fallen. I guess the interest rate rises are starting to take effect and people are paying back more than they borrow each month. One of the first things people will cut down on are holidays. Just a thought.

It is a lot quieter than my last trip over here a couple of months ago but there are still plenty of people to enjoy a night out with, i am visiting MTB, Love bar every night and am drunk when i head on to tai pan or tiger later on.
Last night some drunk guy decided not to pay his bill in one of the bars in bangla road, suddenly 3 big thai guys come out from nowhere and start beating him, not a very pretty sight.

What nationalities are the visitors in Patong currently composed of? Are they mostly Europeans, Asians, or Americans?

I am guessing that Patongs expat community breaks down in order of %ages like

Brits (assorted Jocks, Taffs, Paddys, and Anglos)
Scandivian Euro's
Aussies and Kiwis
Other Euro's
Americans

With not much difference in the middle three categories..

Patong is traditionally quiet during May, but it is quiet more than normal especially in the last 2 weeks

its early summer holiday period for most northern europeans (in my opinion the big spenders in Patong) so I would expect things to pick up a little big from Jun-Aug, aussies for the heat and europeans for their summer holidays

As general rule of thumb the people not returning in anything like the same numbers are Chinese, Koreans, Taiwanese and Japanese. in terms of the bar scene the people from asia missed the most in terms of financial spend are the Japanese, they like to drink and party, the rest (bm malaysian aside) have no real impact on the bar scene but certainly made the street look alot busier before

Its maybe just a personal experience but I have noticed more american male toursits

Backpackers and families are certainly more thin on the ground too

It seems in the short term Patong has returned to its traditional roots as the type of place for drinking and partying and meeting nice thai ladies

I could be wrong on many of these observations as they are usually seen through very thick beer goggles

This was something that i noticed both through the beer goggles, and on the rare occasion's that i left them at the hotel. Though alot of these young American men seemed to just spend alot of time on the beach before heading to Rio and that baya beach place afterwards. I didnt really see that many of the youngsters in the 'real' bars along Bangla. Alot of them would walk up each Soi, but never really stop for more than one drink in each place!

Most of the people drinking in bars were either #old timers (Been to los before) or older couples who were just playing real games with bg's.

(# This of course is a massive generalisation!)

What i did notice, was there wasn't that many young British men about. (Apart from s1mon and me!!! ) On every other trip i have met alot young brits but not on this last trip. I even tried going into that 'Irish bar' Molly Molanoes (Or Scruphy, can never remember which one is still there!), but there were very few in there! Only a couple who kept taking the piss out of me and 'The Sink incedent'! :sad:

Heres hoping that there will be more like minded people in November when i'll prob be back!
