Daoyin Tao

Hi

I was wondering if anyone has heard of Daoyin Tao, a head and shoulders treatment developed from a combination of western and chinese massage. I bumbed into a page about it when browsing for suitable therapies to enhance my current skills and was drawn to it as I am a Taoist and have been for many years and as you can see it contains Tao in the therapy name.

I have read a bit about it but am not sure about it as to me Dao and Tao are the same word just with different english spellings and this therapy has both in the name. Also Tao Yin to me is an ancient Taoist subtle exercise that connects the mind and body. Also this therapy was devised by a western practitioner of massage.

I am considering going to have several treatments to see for myself what it is all about but was wondering if there are any practitioners of this therapy out there or anyone who has had a treatment who would be able to give me a little more insight into the therapy before I look into it further.

ummmm... isn't "dao" another word for "tao"; just a different dialect ("dao" is probably cantonese, "tao" is probably mandarin... i will ask my mum as she speaks both languages). "daoyin" is a chi kung position/form i thought?

I agree with you Darren Dao and Tao are the same chinese word but when translated into English become Tao or Dao depending on the translation method used.

DaoYin as far as I know is a form of Chi Kung that is mainly performed seated on the floor.

As far as I know Tao and Dao are both the result of translating the same Chinese character into English.

Tao is a translation of that character into English or Romanization using the Wade-Giles system of translating Chinese.

Dao is a translation of the same character into English or Romanization using the Pinyin system.

The character is pronounced approximately as "dow" in Peking, as "toe" in Canton and as "daw" in Tokyo.

The Wade-Giles system of translation is the most common system for translating Chinese into English and that is why we see the word written as Tao more often than Dao, although neither system is satisfactory when it comes to pronouncation.

Either way, we both agree that Tao and Dao are words that mean the same thing so why has someone developed a therapy that uses different spellings of the same word in it's title.

Oh yes I knew that. I think we're both asking the same question in different ways. I had a look on their site and it offers no explanation... maybe it's something you could try from an academic viewpoint and see if it makes sense to you, then let us know.

I have looked into doing Daoyin Tao myself in the past and as I understand it, it is a western style face massage with acupressure points and aromatherapy oils.

You can study Daoyin Tao at the Sandra Day school of therapies and no doubt there are other places too. I have had a taster treatment of Daoyin Tao and I enjoyed it very much. It is definitely on my list of therapies I wouldn't mind learning in the future.

I've been a Daoyin Tao Practitioner for 3 years now.
For those who are worried about the name - don't - in my opinion it's really a marketing tool to give people the sense that this is a therapy which is oriental in origin.
On one level it is just a fabulous relaxing therapy - I demonstrate it at shows and people love it.
I have also had clients say they felt emotional blocks waft away during treatment and others have described it as the 'Bees knees of treatments'
It appears very simple, but you are using powerful acupressure points and you can tailor your treatment to address specific problems.
The training is very thorough, (practical, written exam+casestudies)and you are given the basics of Chinese Five Element Theory to work with.
The originator is an experienced complementary practitioner and does know her stuff.
I also incorporate it into other therapies when I know it's going to be helpful.

Thanks for the reply, Pagoda. I wasn't worried over the name to be honest... I just thought it was amusing from a marketing perspective. As to the therapy itself I have no doubt that it works, given the theories it is based on.

I haven't had any experience of it myself, I have however seen them exhibiting at the CHExpo and it has always looked quite popular. I think you are definatley doing the best thing, try have some treatments and see how it works for you. If you like it go for it!
