diabetes and reflexology

I am doing an assignment (vtct) on contraindications and I am a little confused about something. My tutor said that if a client has diabetes then avoid the pancreas reflex, I assume this is because it could stimulate the release of glucagon. However in my vtct book it says to work the pancreas. Does this mean that you can treat type 2 diabetes only?

The pancreas does insulin and Glucogen,. they balance each other out, so working the pancreas gently helps to balance this out, I dont avoid the pancreas on a diabetic.
I have treated clients with both types with sucess ( obviously we cant cure the illness but reflexology is great in helping the body cope with the nasty side effects known to be caused by diabetes) I have treaed a client(type 1) who only had 40 % kidney function when I started treating him due to damage caused by diabetes . After 7 treatments his kidney function had improved to the astonishment of his consultant. This client is convinced that reflexology has helped his body greatly,. and he contines with monthly treatments .

Well all i can tell you is that i am a diabetic type 2 and i have worked on myself with both Reiki and Reflexology as well as diet and exercise and meditation, the latest report i have had from my doctor is that what ever it is i am ding, keep on doing it as i could well be off my meds by March if all goes well.

So with regard to Reflexology and diabetes, it did me only good and i would completely recommend it.

I think that the biggest risk of treating someone with diabetes is that they may have a loss of sensation in their extremeties, and so potentially have foot injuries they are unaware of that can be made worse by reflexology treatments.

I havent treated any diabetics, but I also understand from a friend with diabetes that relaxing during a treatment, and indeed the treatment itself, can cause a drop in blood pressure and a lowering of blood sugar levels .... during training we were advised to make sure than any diabetic clients checked their blood sugar levels before and after treatment, and had available something to boost blood sugar just in case .... I imagine that most clients with diabetes will be aware of their own responses to these situations, but as mentioned before with anyone having peripheral neuropathy, it is a condition that requires a good knowledge base and appropriate care by the therapist.

I was told that we could work the pancreas reflex zone, albeit gently. Advice was for clients to check their reaction to the treatment by testing their sugar levels after the treatment.

If a client is diabetic you have to check for any damage to the skin tissue of the feet, as wounds, ulcers and blood vessel damage can occur, and get medical clearance.
